Will the tread of a new tire make a difference?

Have a 4WD 4Runner. It isn’t AWD though. However I have a a nail on the sidewall of one of my Duratracs and will need a new one installed. It is on one of my rear tires and the old tires are just about 2 years. Recently went off roading and on a road trip to Colorado. So the tires got about 20k miles on them. Will the tread depth difference effect anything on the vehicle? Should I try to replace another or will I be okay just replacing the one?

Shouldn't be a problem for non Awd. Your owners manual should have a specific answer to your rig.

I’ll take a peek into my owners manual in the morning before heading out to the tire shop.

As others said, check the manual for specs on how much tire diameter difference is allowed. Maybe even try calling a dealer as it should be in the FSM. The 4Runner measures rotation speed at each corner for VSC, ATRAC, ABS...probably other systems so there is an expected tolerance. Could increase wear on your diff as well. And assuming you rotate your tires with each oil change, you'll eventually lose track of where that "new" tire is.

Because so many vehicles now have systems that do have pretty tight tolerances on tire diameter, I've see installers that advertise the ability to shave down a new tire so you can install a new single into a set of fairly well worn tires to avoid replacing 2 or all 4.

Good luck!

Yeah I just got one replaced and it’s running fine. Part of me wants to be dishonest though and shove a nail in the opposite tire so I can be rolling with two new warrantied tires but I don’t know if I should lol

Its probably fine with just 20k on the Duratracs, but i usually wouldn't recommend running 2 different tread depth tires. It can change the dynamics of handling/traction in hazardous situations.

Yeah she’s running well. Kind of think it’d be nice to have both rear new though. That new tire looks so good and new lol
