Does the 4th gen 4.7l V8 use a timing belt, or chain? ...
And is it an interference engine? Looking at some 4Runners like this and curious
Thanks very much in advance!

Yeah definitely interference. Might get lucky though if it snaps and it won't ruin the engine.

Yes, there appears to be varying "opinions" on whether the 4.7 is an interference engine or not, I don't particularly want to find out from experience, but one account I read where the belt shredded and allowed one bank to go out of time 180 degrees but resulted in no apparent damage. replaced belt and it ran fine. So if it is an interference it must need just the 'wrong' conditions, i.e., high rpm at time of failure or something.
Whether it is or isn't it's still a fine engine, just make sure you change out the belt close to the recommended interval.

@ speedmaster
PLEASE read all of the replies the general consensus is that the V8 is indeed an interference engine.

Belt and needs replacing every 90k, costs about $1000-$1300 to replace.

I did mine at 80K and then 170K. Yeah, around $1,200 or so. At this post-Covid rate of driving (no office again, ever I hope) I may never live to see the next change.

I've the 4.3 in my LS430 and the 4.7 in my runner, lucky me 2 pesky timing belts.
Both are interference engines. Do the pump and idlers on the second go round.
