Any idea what to check for next??

Only thing I can think of is sway bar bushings.

Don't forget the expensive 1/2 steering shaft replacement. Mine was $275 from Toyota and was one of my last clunks that I fixed last year and completely worth it.

The links can seize up, which will lead to them breaking. Or the ball joints can fail, giving them wiggle room to not transmit forces into the bar.

You'll be able to tell that the links are failing. Moog links are much better than OEM Toyota links. They have a larger diameter shank and a better design for installation/removal.

Gosh, I hope I can hold off on that for at least a couple more years!

Thanks, I’ll check into Moog if it ends up being the links. Sure they’ll be cheaper than OEM.

Come to think of it, we may have tightened the arms in without load on the suspension….

If that’s the case, how would you fix that? Undo and retighten under load?

Thunk is most likely a sway bar issue as mentioned. I actually loosened mine shoved some bicycle tube in there to prove it was those bushings. It was and that tube is still in there a couple years later.

On the arms, you just need to loosen the nuts, let them settle and tighten them back up. You can do it whichever way works for you, using a jack or with the tires on if you can fit.

Still squeaking after suspension refresh

Something you may not have thought to check...the gaskets between the different sections of the exhaust system.

I had an elusive metallic clunk/squeak on large bumps as you describe. Replaced every single suspension component (it was due anyways at 150k miles). Clunk/speak persisted. Got out the spray bottle with soapy water. The gasket between the y pipe and the main cat had deteriorated enough that that joint would move when I hit a big enough bump. Replaced that gasket and noise was gone and hasn’t come back.

It’s a conical gasket that aligns the two sections as the joint is tightened.

I would check there - it may be your culprit.
