Broken Radiator Cap internally.

My radiator cap broke and I cant seem to find the parts that broke off.
From what I know, the side the rad cap is on is the water inlet side so nothing can potentially go back into the engine/water pump and the broken pieces wont make it through the radiator fins. I hope that is true. How do I go about removing the missing pieces? Take out radiator and flush it out?

Ill be replacing the cap today but I dont want to drive it around with the broken pieces still in the radiator. I think its a spring and rubber piece that fell off.

I had the same thing happen, but I was fortunate enough to find all the parts as far as I know...

A reverse flush should work. I'm not 100% sure you have to remove the radiator but that is not a bad idea. Just make sure you disconnect the radiator from the engine first.

The thing is that I am not sure how long I drove like this for lol. Maybe like 50 miles? I tried running the car with the rad cap removed in hopes of the pieces floating to the top. All I got was some small rubber piece. The spring is still somewhere in there.

Doubtful the spring went through the tubes, so it is probably in the top tank somewhere, maybe wedged in a tube.

I hope so. Do you think its safe to drive? I might try and remove the radiator to see if I can find it. My new rad is is coming next week from rockauto and I might have to make a 600 mile trip this weekend.
Ill be replacing the rad cap and burping the system for sure though.

Is there even a spring in our rad caps?

Can't say for certain that there's a spring, but if there wasn't it would be the first radiator cap I have ever seen that didn't have one.

Here's a eBay link that has several good photos so you can see what visible parts maybe missing, unfortunately the way these caps are made the spring wouldn't be visible, but I "know" there has to be a spring somewhere down inside your radiator.

Yes, has to be a spring of some type, coil or wave, and yes I would say it is safe to drive. If the "spring" is swirling around in the top tank it may eventually wear a hole in a tube, but that will take quit awhile I would guess.

Have seen a similar situation on a Cummins diesel oil cooler where a washer somehow got in engine cooling system and was caught by water flow against the oil cooler tube face plate and after swirling around for who knows how long finally would hole into the oil side and coolant in oil was how it was discovered.

Thanks all. I ended up removing the radiator. Held it upside down and gave it shake and out came the rivet and spring. I'm glad I was able to find it. It was driving me nuts. Replaced cap with a AutoZone part for now.

Also cleaned the radiator fins. So much mud!!

I'm still getting water trickle sound when I start. Might need to burp it a little more.
My temps got to 191 max on my test drive which seems normal. Better that the 207 from when this problem started.

Im still getting the water trickle sound behind my dash when I start my car. Even when still hot. I've bled the system about 4 times now for about 20 minutes each time. I did notice some coolant buildup on my radiator so I'm hoping that's it's just a small leak. But this wasn't happening before.

What are the signs of a bad head gasket? I don't have a rough cold start or white smoke. Just the water sound better dash when I start the car. Hot or cold.
