Steering Wheel Controls

Hello,

Total newb... I bought a 2008 4Runner SR5 about an hour ago.

This maybe a dumb question, but I'll ask anyways.

Is it possible to add the steering wheel controls to a 4Runner that does not come with the controls stock?

I've been wanting to do the same thing, but from my research the only way to go about steering wheel controls is to buy a new steering wheel with the controls.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think the answer is yes. You can remove the airbag from the steering wheel, unscrew the blanks and install buttons, that part is easy. I am going to guess that the wiring is there already. I was wanting to add an invertor to my 4R since mine didnt come with one and while it doesnt have anything I took a look under the dash and the wiring for the button is there. All I really need to do is buy the button adn the components and I am in business.

Thanks for the input. Anyone know where I could get a steering wheel with the controls?

I found Prius controls on eBay, but nothing for the 4Runner. I'm not sure they will work.

I would check out the link on the top of this page for partznet. I have needed a couple parts here and there OEM toyota stuff and that site is great, it pretty much has anything you could possibly need. The site is a little difficult to navigate at times but I am sure you will be able to find them.

I've been wondering the same thing. My question is, would you need to purchase the entire airbag, or just the airbag cover?

The leather steering wheel is pricey, but I have not seen pricing on the airbag itself...

second that. You should only have to have buy the control with the buttons as opposed to a whole airbag console. Those are $$$$$$. BTW....does anyone know what the blanks on the right side of the steering wheel would control if there were buttons?

Adding steering wheel control to 2003 .

It is now 2021. I bought a 2003 SR5 with no audio control on steering wheel. After all the posts I read is it doable. Do all 4th gen 4runners have the required wiring to just switch a wheel from a wheel that has the controls. I would think by now that there must be lots in the recycle yards. Guess this includes air bag. Any info would be great. I live in Ontario, Canada and bought a rust free 4runner from California. No rust but no audio control on my steering wheel.

Yes you can add steering wheel controls. You should have the left ones stock (volume control etc).

The right blanks are for limited edition trucks that came with bluetooth and talk/ hang up buttons. When I upgraded to an apple carplay radio I bought the bluetooth controls and the extra wires to plug and play with the radio. Now I can answer and hang up as needed with the apple carplay calls.

I did a write up with my radio install.

So your saying that my 2003 SR5 can be retrofitted with the radio controls. You say you did a write up. Tried looking for it but not found. Where can I find it. I’m assuming the wiring for this is already run to the steering wheel even though my model did not offer it. Is it any easy job with minimum chance of discharging air bag. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I could have sworn I did a write up but I checked and it seems I didn't do a full review of my head unit upgrade / install.

Here are the two pieces you need to run the blue tooth controls:
Steering wheel RH audio BT controls requires switch and harness/wires
Toyota Switch: 8424435030B0 $85 light grey, replace B0 prefix with B1 for dark grey
Ribbon Cable: 84204-58010

If you need the volume control side I have a spare one I bought by accident I can sell you. Shoot me a pm if you need help finding the right toyota P/Ns

During my research I noticed that threre are different suffixes for the part numbers that indicate color of steering wheel (ie light grey or dark grey).

Hey: Appreciate all the info. Doesn’t sound like a plug and play situation where all I need to do is find a steering wheel and replace it with my current one. I thought all the wiring was already there and a lot easier . Think I’ll have to live with my situation. Appreciate your reply. Thanks
