Replaced hatch latch assembly

So I just replaced the hatch latch assembly with the one below from Amazon. Now I finally have a working rear hatch which seems odd as it's been broken for 3 years or so. We'll see how long it lasts but the price was right to try it. I kept the old one in case something like a motor fails. Pretty easy swap.

Toyota should have recalled all of them worthless motor powered hatch opening and closing devices, they were poorly designed and have caused problems from day one.

It is an odd system but I'd rather have a frame that doesn't rust inside out.

What happens if it fails? Is the hatch permanently open?

It does seem to be a solution to a problem that doesn't exist...I had a van with a huge tailgate and that still didn't have a motor assembly, just a catch.

Some seize closed and have to be forced open which I think is what the previous owner did on mine. They had it held closed with a ratchet strap. I freed up the mechanism and but a toggle switch tied straight to the motor to latch and unlatch. That does get kinda old fooling with though.

It seems to be a 3 step thing, the motor pulls the hatch in, the latch goes far enough to lock into place then the motor releases. The common issue is the 2nd step seems to fail so when the motor releases it is no longer latched and will open.

Thanks for the info. I am amazed to see there seems to be one in the UK, I might just get it as a spare. Does this look correct? (The part I mean, sometimes descriptions aren't correct, and I wouldn't know until I had to change the old one!)

Mine started to malfunction a while ago and the latch wouldn't open all the way up at times, so that when I went to close it the door would slam against the closed locking mechanism and not shut. I could just open the lock with my finger and then it would close, but I sprayed some CLP all over and that has done the trick for a few months now. But thanks for the link, I've got 260k+ miles so I'm sure I'll have to replace this at some point soon.

The part number is correct, (Lock Assembly, With Motor B - Toyota (69110-35090), here's a link to the latch/motor assembly for a 2007 T4R (the same for 2003 to 2009 T4Rs) from a Toyota dealership in the USA.

Cheers! I'm sure Toyota know how to design a quality electric door latch, but in this case they could learn from Lotus, "Simplify then add lightness"

I just have to wonder why Toyota Engineers and Designer's, thought buyers needed motors to latch closed their 4Runners rear hatch.

It's not nearly as complicated as many new rear hatches where you never touch the hatch, you push a button on the fob to open and close the hatch!!

Looks correct to me. Looks like it even has the piece of string mine had that went to the manual unlock. Dunno why that is needed so I removed it as it was in the way.

if you really wanted a manual system, i tied a bunch of string against the tailgate and attached it to the manual release latch in the back of the trunk door for a few months before finally deciding to replace the latch. my typical procedure to open the hatch would be to drop the rear glass, pull the string, close the rear glass, release.

genius. ha

Knock on wood, but my hatch has been operating without any issues for almost 17 years. I would say it is a robust system if it's been without any issues for that long.
