Burning plastic smell and muted whine sound under the hood

Ex father in law thinks serpentine belt and dad thinks alternator is going. Any other ideas? Lol

Probably belt related... does the sound change with RPMs? It could b the belt itself, or any of the pulleys not spinning freely as well (that includes the alterantor, I have had a few lock up on my fleet vehicles, however that will smoke a belt off in a matter of seconds)

Make sure yhou tensioner is still tensioning properly and isn't stuck.

The belt isn't too bad to replace. Pull the skid plate/splash guard and do it from the botttom. With the belt off spin everything by hand and make sure it spins freely.

Another cluprit can be the clutch on the A/C compressor starting to go. As it wears out it cant fully enagage so it will slip and make noise and could potentially cause a smell as well. This would only happen with the AC engaged.

I think it's a belt or alternator. Still happens with AC off and I noticed just now it was more difficult to turn over, which makes me think my battery isn't getting a great charge.
