Make sure yhou tensioner is still tensioning properly and isn't stuck.
The belt isn't too bad to replace. Pull the skid plate/splash guard and do it from the botttom. With the belt off spin everything by hand and make sure it spins freely.
Another cluprit can be the clutch on the A/C compressor starting to go. As it wears out it cant fully enagage so it will slip and make noise and could potentially cause a smell as well. This would only happen with the AC engaged.

I think it's a belt or alternator. Still happens with AC off and I noticed just now it was more difficult to turn over, which makes me think my battery isn't getting a great charge.
