1a auto headers

hi folks - my manifold tick got worse recently and went from a tick when cold, then a tick full time, an now more of a throaty sort of sound under load. i've read about the issue a lot on the forums here.

the crack sounds like it's on the left side and i ordered an 1a-auto left side only header/cat. wanted the thorley's but the budget isn't there and i know it's a big job at the shop. the LH assembly was 300US and came with hardware.

just wondering if anybody else chose to replace their headers one at a time and had any experiences to share about the 1a-auto part.

i'm also curious - how bad does it get? i bought it with the tick and put 65,000km on it and it's only just started to get a little worse. i found the noise a little annoying but i don't think i drew any attention with it.

thanks!

I didn't do the A1 headers. But my ticking sound turned into an open header style roar at one point... where driving next to a concrete barrier, bouncing the sound back at me, made it sound like I had no exhaust at all. And this happened 1100km from home. It roared terribly for a half hour and then for as inexplicably as the problem arrived, it went away. An exhaust shop said it was safe to drive back home... so there was nothing I could do except keep driving.

When the original manifolds finally came off, was a giant crack in the passenger side, and a smaller crack in driver side. For whatever reason the sound/volume of the problem would always change, come and go, making it that much more annoying.

I had to replace my RHS exhaust manifold due to cracking. Considered headers but just went with the OEM part. It was pretty expensive but I do believe that OEM is the way to go in just about everything for these cars.

Except for the headers. They'll eventually just crack again.

While that’s a fair point… the catalytic converter on the oem header will probably last twice as long as an aftermarket replacement, at least from my experience across various platforms, so either way it’s not like this is a one time fix if you’re planning on keeping the rig

well folks it's day 1 of new aftermarket header on left side only. the 1a auto header/cat combo went on without a hitch although my mechanic said it wasn't a very fun job. charged me 6 hours of labor for the one side. i'm at 252,000km and so i guess i'll just wait the passenger side out. i wonder if one side is more prone to crack than the other. doesn't seem so.

the vehicle had the tick longer than i've owned it so it sounds pretty awesome driving without the tick and a bit smoother too.

i'll update this thread if the aftermarket header or cat fails or develops the tick, or if the passenger one starts going.
