Air recirc defaults to ON

I'm not sure if this just a peculiarity of a JDM vehicle, but does anyone know if there is a combination of buttons, or a setting in the Toyota diagnostics software, to turn off air re-circulation unless I manually press the button?

With LO temp selected it defaults every time the ignition is switched on.

It would make sense if the air con was on, but it's just daft otherwise! If I forget to turn it off, the windows start steaming up.

Am also curious... my '07 Sport does the same and I would like to change it if possible.

I had a VW that did this as well. It is just plain irritating. I don't need my hand held.

Well I got my laptop out and hooked it up to Techstream...nothing available under customisation for Air Conditioner, and it doesn't seem to think there are any AC ECUs, so that's that!

Might have to go old school and just...unplug the flap motor!

It is normal operation, there are a ton of threads about this. Both Toyota and Lexus cars/suvs/etc do this. The computer reads the humidity level in the cabin and adjusts (open/closes) the recirc door accordingly to best maintain the temperature inside. If you don't like it, just press the recirc button. No techstream or nonsense required.

Cookie, I appreciate the explanation but of course the point is that this is both irritating and unnecessary.

The question is whether this is modifiable to *default* to not automatically turning itself on. I want all functions of my air system to be managed manually. That’s my personal preference.

Surfer, my '08 SR5 (United States) won't default to recirc on start-up provided that both of these conditions are met:

AC on/off switch is off when engine shuts down
Recirc is off when engine shuts down

Secondary method:

If defrost is selected, the recirc function is off and is not even available for manual selection.

That's interesting - I've ruled out the first two already as I don't use AC as a matter of course, don't really need to over here in autumn, but I'll try leaving it set to windscreen and see if that stops it defaulting.

Thanks!
