High mileage T4Rs:what have you fixed?

I have a 2003 V8 Sport that just crested 250k and with the current market, I am not inclined to replace it. So, I want to see it go another 100k. What should I expect to fix?

When I had the oil changed last, they said it seems to be burning a little oil. Is that normal for the V8?

I am doing the timing belt/water pump soon. So, check.

I was told replacing the tranny oil at this point is dangerous because it may open a can of worms(?).

Suspension? I have never lifted it so, I am thinking of replacing the shocks and doing a level at the same time.

Transfer case? Joints?

Anything else?

My 06 SR5 has 255k miles, I got it at ~230k. The A/C compressor was out when I got it, I replaced the compressor, condensor, and expansion valve myself. Loaner tools from oreilly's saved me about $400, and the total cost (including paying a shop to evacuate the system before I disconnected anything) was around $500. That's not including the air compressor, but I spent a lot more on that than necessary for the A/C repair. It's a 20 gallon, 4cfm@90psi compressor that can run some of the smaller paint guns continuously and most air tools. Turns out air tools are cheaper than powered tools, when you don't factor in the compressor...

I also replaced the power steering pump, that wasn't too bad.

I changed all of the fluids in the drivetrain a few weeks ago (trans and all 3 diffs), that wasn't too hard either. The transmission takes the longest, especially if you change the filter. The differentials are a piece of cake.

I'm planning on upgrading the suspension, but I can't decide if I want to get steel/aluminum bumpers and/or a winch.

Greasing the driveshaft zerks isn't mentioned in the service manual, but it fixed an annoying clunk when I let go of the brakes. There's one (or 2?) on the drive shaft and 1 on each u-joint.

Thanks for the input. Did you notice any difference in the tranny shifting after you changed the fluids?

Super helpful, thanks.

I just bought a 2007 Sport (V6 2WD) with 195k miles. I'm treating her like the maintenance has never been done (and I don't believe it has, other than basic oil changes). Here's what I've done:

- Oil change and filter
- Cabin air and engine air filter
- 4 new tires/wiper blades
- Shocks/struts all the way around (used KYB, kept original springs)
- Sway bar/stabilizer bar bushings up front
- Spark plugs (mine still had the original, believe it or not)
- Front calipers and brake pads
- Brake fluid bleed
- Power steering fluid exhange
- Automatic transmission drain and fill (~3.5 quarts, not the full flush)
- Dash bulb replacements where necessary
- Headlight bulbs and headlight casing refinish

EDIT - I should add differential fluid exchange to my list

Still on my list is some body work (has a few small rust spots that need to be ground out and repainted... will do as soon as I get a break in the weather). I'm also keeping an eye on a weeping valve cover gasket; it isn't an active leak but may be something I do next year. I'm also strongly considering a full drain and refill of coolant, but for now I just topped it off with Supertech Toyota & Lexus 50/50... it was low on coolant, so it may have a tiny, tiny leak or it may have just boiled off some coolant over time.

Yes, but only because I abused it and waited too long to change the fluid. It was shifting perfectly when I got it, but a couple months ago I went on a 3k mile road trip towing a 2000 lbs popup camper. I didn't know I was supposed to keep it in 4th while towing so I had it in D the entire time. We took the I80 through WY, OH, and NV in 100+ degree weather going 80+ mph. A week or 2 after I got home, shifting into 5th gear when I was light on the throttle started getting really harsh. Changing the fluid helped a lot, but didn't fix it entirely. It only has trouble shifting into 5th when I'm light on the throttle, like in traffic, so I keep it in 4 around town and put it in D when I get on the freeway. If I have to I'll replace the transmission myself, but if it doesn't get any worse I'm not going to touch it. Except to change the fluid in 30k miles.

I also added a Hayden transmission cooler a couple weeks ago. Wish I did that before the trip...

Red face Suspension

Redid suspension on all 4 corners, took suggestion someone had of using an air chisel because the front struts were quite rusted
