Easier Maplight Mod?

Does anyone have an easier maplight mod than J.A.'s here: Toyota 4Runner Maplight Mod

This would be a really nice feature to have but disassembling the entire dash and removing the instrument cluster surrounds seems... excessive.

Also, I've got a sun roof, so running a wire to the dome light isn't easy either -_- Anybody have any other good ideas? Or is that the best options we've got?

short answer: No.

If you want the exact modification I don't see a much easier way to go about it.

Why not just pop in a few LED lights where needed and wire them to an on-demand button. Sure it would still take a bit of wiring, but would be significantly less modification to get it working.

Yes, I did this a couple weeks ago by running a wire from the center dome light. My 4R doesn't have a sunroof, but it wouldn't have been much harder if it did. There's insulation in the roof that you need to get past either way, and there are plenty of videos on youtube on how to route wires around a sunroof (you basically just tuck it behind the trim once you get it to the sunroof).

You do not need to take the cluster surround off. Just run the wire through the headliner and down the A pillar. You will need to pull the lower cover from under steering wheel. JA is just running the wire better by pulling the surround off. Its really easy to pull that off. I would just do it his way.
