I wonder if the 1st gen sequoia transfer case/transmission combo will work on our 4runners? On our 03 sequoia it has a manual transfer case and part time 4wd. Its a 4speed, same as the early v6 4runners but mated to the v8.

HC, by chance is the frame in good rust free condition, are you willing to part with it, i've been looking for a v8 4x4 frame to replace mine.

Checking in to see if you can confirm the driveshaft spacer bolt pattern.. I measured mine twice when doing the fj transfer case and still ended up with the wrong bolt pattern.. curious to know if you can confirm what actually worked for you..

Also, just a thought on the front diff install. .if you plan on running a large tire, or if you just want the peace of mind, I'd suggest gusseting the passenger side diff mount on the two side to keep it from failing down the road. Not a very common thing, but I've seen 3 guys report failures within a 2 week span a few months ago so I decided to pull mine off and weld on some 3/16" steel plate on either side of the long run.

Good stuff!
I swapped in a manual t-case last spring on my AWD V8.
So I have to give you props for putting together a good write up.

Turning the wrenches and doing a write up is no easy task.

there are pro's and con's, it ultimately falls on the end goal.. firstly, you must be able to do the work yourself to justify something like this.. I think that's obvious lol.

With that said.. if you look at a build like I did.. where you literally are pulling anything and everything apart to upgrade any how.. why not? You can get into a much less desirable 2wd rig with low miles and spend the difference in initial cost to throw in parts you would have upgraded anyhow.

if I were to build my rig from scratch again I could easily see huge benefits to starting with a 2wd setup and ending up with a fully built out 4wd

I will create a write up here for anyone interested in doing the same, or if anyone is interested exactly what it took!

I wheeled my 2WD 4th gen for a few years with the boys but I never quite got to do everything they were able to do in their 4x4s. I was looking to up the anti and be able to go farther and hopefully break less parts. In my attempts to hang with the big boys, I blew up my diff rendering my daily immobile. I got stuck easier or couldnt make it up or over certain obstacles. Strangely enough, my Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws helped me get around just fine in 6+ of snow without 4x4.

Before you are dead set on completing this conversion yourself, know some things. It cost me about $3000 doing 95% of the work myself. It took me 50 hours having almost no assistance and using mainly basic tools and working on the garage floor. It was a major pain in the ass not having the proper tools, a post lift, or a dedicated week to complete it without other responsibilities. Completing this conversion will be much less of a headache if you have any of these: parts truck, two post lift, transmission jack/cradle, good impact driver, a few days off without much interruption, a separate vehicle to drive, another hand or two, etc.

ALSO. This conversion requires you to cut a hole in your transmission tunnel and reseal it. If you are not okay with this, then this mod is not for you!
Thinking about doing this to my 2007 what is all needed? Front driveshaft, axles, t-case, interior bits, diff, what else am I missing?

Great thread!

Did you have a Body Lift at all? I'm considering the FJ T-Case swap in the future, but heard that it doesn't fit well without a body lift.

Thanks
