ok, pulled the R13 relay. brake lights inoperable, as well as VSC dash lights did not return upon start up. suppose only option is to source a replacement?

jumped on ebay, ordered a used superceded relay with a 1 yr warranty and tested for $10 shipped. better than gambling on a $50 part.

Well you need the relay plugged in for the stop lights to work. It's a switch. That doesn't tell you if it's good or bad. You need to test it before you buy another part dang it. Hopefully that's the problem though.

Have you tried plugging in another relay of the same prong layout?

no, haven't done that yet. been busy today, but did want to return the pedal switch and get the used relay purchase achieved ASAP.

i believe the VSC lights came on the same time the brake lights started running full time. using the same relay.

Yes the stop switch signal is an input to the skid ECU. Did you say that went away with the relay out?

Brake lights constantly on?

i believe with the ignition off, the brake lights get their electricity directly from the battery. with ignition on, they get their power through that system.

maybe teach can clarify this thinking.

I may have missed that. Look at the wire diagram, check the relay and fuses. Possible relay is stuck in power instead of switching

Might be a little late as I was typing and troubleshooting

yes, hoping that relay is just stuck open, and the replacement will return things to normal. never had a relay fail in years of driving.

I see 3 other relays in the photo that very well could have the same part number, I would of checked them to see if indeed they have the same part number and if so tried it to see if the brake lights worked properly.

Stop Lights on with lights

Many years ago, had the same problem. Tail bulb, 1157 broke dimmer filament and it landed on the stop filament. Thus, brake lights with headlights on. Remove both tail bulbs and reinsert one at a time and see what happens. Good luck

thx for the suggestion, though, in this case, brake lights are on w/o headlights on.
