My wife's '03 Acura 3.2CL Type S w/ 145K miles is clean inside and out. Took it in twice for the dealer to change out the defective airbags and both times, the same employee came out to the service drive just google-eyed. He said they get year-old cars in there that are trashed so it's pretty rare to see one that's pristine even though it's old enough to vote. LOL
@ billbuckets
, did you get your 4LO working?
Good catch,
@ AuSeeker
, I let that subjective rust description slide. One person's "some rust" could be someone else's "a piece of my frame just fell off in the road."

@ Bluesky 07
unfortunately due to being in college with no workspace I haven't been able to try anything on it yet. I've seen the many threads on this forum and to be quite honest they scare me lol. Planning on diagnosing/attempting to fix this summer. Did you ever have this problem with your T4R?

So one idea is to just try to engage it whenever you drive the truck. Some people have said doing that can eventually work the mechanism loose so that it works. I'm no expert but it sounds from some of the threads I've followed that there's nothing more wrong with some of them than being kind of gummed up inside from nonuse. That's why the manual says to engage the 4WD monthly. Also a good idea, if you haven't already, to review the procedures (in the manual or the back side of the sun visor) to be sure everything is done correctly since there are different processes. For example, you can engage 4HI on the move (under 62 mph IIRC) but you have to be stopped and in neutral to engage 4LO.
To your question, yes, but fortunately it was discovered during the purchase and the dealer repaired it. The situation was unusual - it took over a year to find a 4th Gen even though the only two must-haves on my list were 4WD and a sunroof. Finally resorted to calling Toyota dealers in every town we passed driving to and from an Outer Banks vacation. Lucked out and found this truck in Greenville, SC, and they were kind enough to transfer it to an associated dealer here in metro Atlanta.
We had made the deal contingent on a mechanical inspection and when I told their sales guy that the 4WD wouldn't engage, he went pale. He said they usually just sent any trade-ins with that condition straight to auction because it costs so much to repair. Since we had the deal already, they fixed it. We agreed to add 25% of their repair cost (not retail) to the purchase price b/c we ended up getting a bargain compared to blue book even with that added. Definitely felt that was fair.

Wow I feel like you lucked out! Seems to be a common theme on these trucks, aka: "use it or lose it". Will definitely try to engage it routinely now. Thanks for the tips!
Actually, despite this seeming to be a little off topic from what OP was asking, it may be a decent thing to consider when selling or buying a 4th gen. I probably would've paid less had I known that this could happen to these trucks. On the test drive I just assumed I performed the 4LO engagement sequence incorrectly because I hadn't read up on the sticky actuator issues beforehand. If the truck has issues with 4wd engagement it could definitely reduce resale value!

Yes, apologies to
@ jerlane
for the sidebar but as you said, it's definitely a legitimate concern when valuing or shopping for a 4th Gen.

30k for an 04 is ridiculous. It is still an 04.

I appreciate everyone's input so far. I'll take a look underneath when I can to get a better idea of the "corrosion" situation. FWIW, we replaced the 4WD actuator about two years ago. It was one of the few maintenanecv issues we've had outside of normal wear and tear. I don't recall it being terribly expensive. Not like the timing chain we're looking at!

Why would a timing chain wear out that early?

That's the million dollar (or $2600) dollar question. It shouldn't happen. We have been getting the p0016 error code since the car had 59,000 miles or so and it has always driven perfectly. No rough idling or anything that seems out of sorts. We had it in the shop a few times to trouble shoot it and have had the cam shaft sensor replaced which didn't fix it. It seems like if the timing chain were really stretched or had skipped a tooth there would be some symptoms. My next step is to take it to the dealership to have them take a look.

You can tell if the timing chain is stretched simply by removing the inspection cover and looking at how far the tensioner is extended, very easy to do.

How much did you end up getting for it? Getting ready to list my '04 V8 limited. 173k miles. Thoughts on pricing? Thanks.
