luckily i like to research alot and recently found cheaper oem parts through the dealer so during my research came across the part#1140039135 which is the short block. saw one on ebay which included everything, so i hmmmmm wtf, thought i was told its just the bare block. so called two toyota dealers to confirm part#1140039135 is for short block assembly 1grfe. has pistons, crank, rods, bearings, etc. my total with tax and discount of 25% parts sale came out to about $2500. so hopefully get it in a couple of days as it states they had it local.

Can I ask how you got a 25% discount? That's awesome. I searched that part number and my local dealer has it for $3170 before tax. That's better than MSRP of $3899, but not even close to what you paid. That's a good deal.

Googled the part# with my city. And looked for the cheapest one. Had to drive 45mins away but got what need way cheaper than my local dealer. Parts store online for the ones I found had an online sale till today in the SE region.

Good researching. I'm interested in seeing what failed on the old motor.

Rod bearing went out, disintegrated. Piston slapped the walls so instead of Rebuilding what I had. Choose to spend a couple hundred more to start fresh. By the time I send the block and do the pistons etc wasn’t worth what I felt wasting my time to do the whole bottom end to spec. Let Toyota handle that part, and I just throw the heads I had redone on.

Wow, this is awesome. I hope I never have to go this route but nice to see the possibility. My wife will seriously wonder why I would want to keep my runner for so long.... LOL

i mean compared to jump into a $700 car payment, i think shelling out less than $5k to get an awesome suv going for years would be worth it. my 15 yr old boy get the accord i have, i joke around that my 10 yr old daughter can have the 4runner, but who knows.
i also like doing things to the best of my ability, hense the biting the bullet and just saying F it and buy the short block since i had already gotten the heads redone might as well put in a fresh bottom end and that be the last of it.

Is your son helping you with this project, I hope so it's a great learning experience for him, even your daughter would benefit from the experience?
I started helping my father doing mechanical work when I was around 5 or 6 years old, that was 50+ years ago!

Shipping to me up here in WI was only 117.00. (I did not order but was able to price shipping)
Considering what it is, that is not a bad price, still a great deal in my book.

Been pretty busy lately but i've been antsy to put the block on the engine stand get the party going. Did that and sealed the rear plate with new sealant. Went ahead and bought a new upper oil pan as the engine came off the chains when i was taking it out during removal do to laziness basically. So during the sale i bought the oil pan as well. I'll post updates and pics as i go on with assembly. pretty sure its going to be easier to assemble everything, including the new motor mounts i bought to have a line of sight to line it up with the tranny. Slowly but surely will get it done and hopefully back running within a week or two.

Soon as my kiddo got home from school, we went to wrenching, spent about a good hour and a half on it, explaining to him some components and how things work as we went along. Had him use a torque wrench and he did the head bolt, as well as made him tighten them 180' turn. He struggled a little but he persisted to want to do them all himself.
Literally had one bolt left on the cams, and i freaking dropped it inside the head, so had to disassemble one side, and low and behold the bolt was sitting on my shiny new piston. So put everything back to where me and the boy left off, of tightening the cam bolts, theirs just hand tightened right now.
Tomorrow saturday will probably get alot more done since we have the whole day to work on it.

This is GREAT!!
Your son will remember working on this engine build for the rest of his life, I know this for a fact as I remember the first engine build I did and I'm 66 now and did that first engine build at 12 years old, my father watched everything I did but didn't lift a finger to help, just gave a bit of advice when I asked for it if I wasn't sure of what to do but at that point I had been working beside him on all of our vehicles since I was 6 years old.
