Year: 2008

Engine: V8

2WD/4WD: Full time 4WD

Items replaced with approximate costs:
-AC $1100 @155k miles (now failed and having to replace the import direct Compressor with a Denso unit - $850 next week)

-Fan clutch $180 @164k

Previous owner has replaced several seized calipers for somewhere around $1100 total

Timing belt/WP is going to be expensive, lowest quote for the V8 is $1100

Mileage: 167k

Mods: None

Any additional comments: Compared to my 3rd gen V6, there seems to be more maintenance required. The AC system is a HUGE labor intensive job. I highly recommend to ask your shop which parts they are using. IMO only use Denso (OEM).

Mines an 04 V8 AWD I bought it with 111k miles on it and have replaced the timing and water pump at 122k miles cost was $571. I also had the shift motor seal replaced in the T-case at 130k miles cost was $560. Replaced the front output shaft seal on the T-case cost was $21 for parts. Just recently did the starter I think it was $180 for parts (dealership reman) but I just can’t remember. Most things I do myself but some things I have to pay others for. It currently has 201k miles on it and I have 3 major issues that I’m working on fixing. The HBB is next on the list at roughly $1300 for parts. Leaky driver side exhaust manifold roughly $500 in parts. Last but not least I devolved a rear main leak after I had to be rescued from the river. All in all for the age and abuse I put her through this vehicle is amazing!

Interesting thread. We worry that the cost to maintain the 4th gen is too high when the truck is over 120,000 miles is kind of funny. If you owned a Chevy or Ford or pos Chrysler, you’d be discussing sending your truck to be scapped and replacing it with a new truck. So a few thousand bucks seems cheap in comparison to a new truck.

I bought my ‘07 sport with 222,000 miles with plenty of deferred maintenance. I have wrenched a lot on this truck to make it reliable for me and my boat. But its only been $$ for parts and my labor. I paid $6,500 plus tax, $7200 out the door (pre covid). Then about $1500-$2000 in parts to make it like new again. If you cant wrench or wont wrench, it can get very expensive for the owner. Every repair at the dealership generally costs $500 to $1500. Half that for an independent shop. If I couldnt fix it, I would never buy a toyota or any vehicle over 100,000 miles.

List of work done so far:
New bilstein shocks
Water pump, T-stat, rad hoses, pulleys, radiator, tranny cooler
Tranny flush, diff fluid, transfer case fluid
Front wheel bearings, axles
Brakes: 4 calipers, pads, SS flex lines, flush fluid
Sway bar bushings, other bushings
Fuel pump (not failed but aged)
Fuel injectors, intake gaskets
Spark plugs, pcv, valve cover gaskets
AC condenser (leaking) recharged
MAF

Cost was parts only, I did all the work. But consider how much all this would cost if you paid a mechanic to do it and hope they did it right with quality parts. I bought Denso when I could. It would be staggering.

I absolutely agree with you, it is all relative to other vehicles on the road. Like you said, most other vehicles at this mileage would be very expensive to keep running. Thanks for your post!

Let’s keep the posts rolling

Mine's an 03' V8 SR5, completely stock, nearly 200k miles. It hasn't been too bad aside from the frame rust, the shot suspension and the 20 y/o stock, rotting, aluminum rims. The V8 is soldering on with little need for maintenance (Aside from regular maintenance and nothing that cant be fixed by duct tape.)
I got my 4runner for free at 186K, and I plan on eventually doing a full restoration, so costs to maintain it decently until that point are rising steadily. My biggest issue is with the frame, it's getting to the point a frame shop needs to do some work with it. Rust is eating through it like crazy. (Usually anywhere from 1,000-10,000 repair.)
Otherwise had to get all four brakes completely worked on, as well as brake lines. That was around 3-4,000$. 1 seized caliper, rear brake lines broken, and warped brakes.
It really depends on who the last owner was and how they treated theirs. Mine has seen a few good winters, 20 years of daily driving, a collision ripping the wheel off, a collision into a ditch, and the bottom of a shallow riverbed at some point.

Year: 03 (I've owned it for almost 3.5 years I think)
Engine: V6 (very neglected when I bought it for somewhat cheap)
Mileage: bought with 199k now has 216k or so
2WD/4WD: 4x4 limited

Items replaced with approximate costs within the time I've owned it:
-exhaust bits - $250ish
-Gen 5 front strut assemblies and new rear shocks - $160
-Calipers, brake pads & disks all around plus all new rear brake lines. - $500?
-fixed oil pressure issue from neglect and sludge - $50
-front wheel bearings & dust shields - $200ish
-left & right CV axles - came in a box with the car so $0
-frame rust repair - cost of welding materials only
-ball joint that I paid a mechanic to do as I had no time $140ish
-dash bulbs - $10
-blinking a/c light - price of a new relay (blows cold air now)
-hatch wiper motor, power window bits (used) and latch (new AM) - $160ish
-alternator - $60 used
-serpentine belts and pulleys - $?
-front DRL/blinker sockets - $20
-floppy shifter - $0
-stuck spare winch - $0
-must be something I'm missing......
**adding-
-spark plugs
-front 02 sensors that had burnt out heaters because of a bad relay $100ish
-remote starter - $250

Mods: backup camera, oil pressure gauge, fisher plow

Any additional comments:
The salt use here does cars in pretty quickly. I do most of the repair work myself. Buying old high mileage cars would not work if I had to pay someone for it all. On a side note, my wife's Honda van is a few years newer with more mileage but less cost to maintain.

Is it expensive? Depends on who you have do the work.

Owned mine from 115k to 175k.
Only thing that 'broke' that I replaced was a leaking CV boot very early on in my ownership.

Replaced spark plugs, freed up a frozen caliper, replaced wheel bearings while I had them off, brake pads but they still had some meat left, and fluids.

Mods: Rear interior window switch, door open. level kit and remote start.

I bought it around 160k, needed a timing belt. Replaced everything in there. Changed all fluids, full atf exchange, front center and rear diffs, coolant. Just changed the radiator last summer from original. Previous owner had done the brake booster and shocks. Aside from these it's basically been preventive maintenance. Due for spark plugs and brakes soon (100k on brakes).

I've got an '04 sport V8 with 162,000 miles and I wish I kept track of how much I've spent maintaining it.
So for I've replaced the entire suspension system, lower steering shaft, CV axles, radiator, all 4 brake calipers & brake lines plus a lot of little things like spark plugs, PVC valve, transfer case oil seals, side veiw mirror switch, two O2 sensors & probably a few other things I'm not remembering right now. A little over $3000 all together sounds about right. I do all the work myself with one exception when I paid an independent $650 to replace the timing belt & water pump.

It's all relative though. Even if I have to throw $1000 in parts at it every year that's still a whole lot cheaper than car payments every month. I'll keep at it for as log as the frame & body hold up. Besides, I like working on it-exept when it's -20 degrees outside.

Honestly, I would have to really dig into my records to try and get a rough cost on parts, not to mention it wouldn't be accurate since I don't pay labor.

I can say that I've easily dropped over $6k in parts maintaining my 2004 V8 4WD over the last 11 or so years and 80k it so. I bought it with something like 86k on the clock and it was in rather good condition when I got it. But I also do a lot of preventive maintenance and have had to repair/rebuild some of the aftermarket things over the years, for example sending my Radflo lift in to be rebuilt after 4-6yrs and about 50k (yes, you actually should be having those fancy lift kits serviced guys! Shocks are not lifetime parts, most factory and aftermarket shocks degrade/start to wear out around 50-60k even if they don't leak! ), that alone was something like $800 for all 4 corners being rebuilt, plus maybe $50-100 in shipping, and another $100-ish for a cheap spacer lift to throw on some take-off Tacoma suspension we had lying in the back of the parts department that I borrowed. Other stuff was replacing things that hadn't failed, but benefited from servicing (i.e. building new lower control arms, a new set of sway bar bushings and links, new plugs every 50k, new headlights because the old ones were yellowing which needed updated connectors, etc.), so it's hard to say that my 4Runner has been expensive to maintain. I'm currently debating if I want to attempt to rebuild my powersteering pump or just bite the bullet and buy a new one, it's been getting a bit more whiny outside of very cold temperatures and I'm sure it's had a fairly hard life when I used to offroad a lot and pushing around the chunky tires I've had for almost as long as I've owned it. But does that count as maintenance? I could probably get away with never changing it and be good for a while as long as I service the fluid regularly; or I could wait until it fails and probably takes out the steering rack with sparkles and then buy all new steering system components, it's sort of the gray area you find yourself when you work on stuff a lot. Lol

I do enjoy working on my vehicle and I tend to budget my finances so that I can take care of the old girl, rather than wait for something to fail.

Year: 2008

Engine: 4.0

2WD/4WD: 4x4

Items replaced with approximate costs: Just recently;
Alternator, idler pulleys, tensioner, belt - $450
Moog LCAs w/ball joints - $320
Dobinsons IMS shocks with new coils, swaybar links - $1300
New alarm and remote start - $300

Past repairs;
Rear wheel bearings - $700
Oil, fluids, spark plugs, cabin filters over the years - Probably $1500ish

Mileage: 205,000 miles

Mods: Yes, lifted, bumper, winch, stereo system, sliders, skids

Any additional comments: So far, this 4Runner has been cheap and easy to maintain. The latest repairs are somewhat expected for a vehicle this old, with this many miles, many hard off-road miles. It's been reliable and I still enjoy driving it.

I keep a detailed spreadsheet of all maintenance done, hopefully this helps someone

The TL: DR is over last 50k miles I've spent $4,821.87 in maintenance over last six years since 180k miles, the biggest expense being wheel bearings, brakes and XRES removal.

Not everything was required but I don't like to let small problems fester and try to use only use OEM parts since I'm planning on keeping this truck forever.

RBLACAUSA is on a distinguished road
Year: 2004 - orig. owner
Engine: V8
2WD/4WD: 4WD Sport
Items replaced with approximate costs:
Mileage: 119k
Mods: Current: Shrockworks bull bar since 2006, 2nd Icon front/rear suspension system, Hanna sliders
Any additional comments:

The beauty of a So Cal car is that rust won't eat it alive. This 4Runner has been insanely reliable. The only "non-preventative maintenance" items I've had to repair/replace due to failure that I can recall are one or two O2 sensors (DIY), door lock actuators (DIY) rear subwoofer JBL system (DIY), rear window "window belt" (the horizontal rubber "squeegee" that wipes the rear window when it opens and closes, also DIY), and the gas cap a couple of times. My actuator has the slow leak at the transfer case and I'm looking for a mechanic here in coastal LA that can fix that. In the past year I noticed that one of my front CVs had a torn boot and my LCA bushings were shot so I replaced the CVs and the complete LCAs with new OEM. At the same time, I had my mechanic replace the bearings and hubs and all related seals and hardware and front diff fluid. Also had him replace weeping valve cover gaskets plug tubes, and engine oil/filter and spark plugs. I bought all the parts at a good discount, and mechanic charged about a little under $1,300 for total labor. Last month I had the rack and pinion and PS hoses replaced, again all OEM. That was about $2k.

Sooo....about $5-6k the past year on replacing long-life parts that should be good for another 10-15 years. I anticipate the rear main seal will leak at some point, and I'll probably need a new radiator and alternator within a few yrs. Still...haven't had a car payment since 2009...13 yrs ago. Last year the idea was that I'd hang on to this 4Runner forever as my dedicated off road explorer and camping truck.

Beauty of 03-04 is no secondary AIS to fail. Replacing the timing belt/water pump etc at 80k miles is PM in my opinion, along with brake pads/discs, and other wear paerts and fluids so I'm not including them...only including failed parts.
