Hi Ed,
Only quoting a part of this for the notification.
This is a real bugger of a situation. Sorry to hear you got screwed on this with the cover-up job.
I'm inclined to point out that the nature of your post, in a way, answers the question. It seems hidden in your words that you want to dispose of this truck and put it behind you. And, speaking personally, that's not easy to do when calculating sentimentality into a dollar value.
If you have the time and inclination, a frame swap to return its value to the market isn't
unreasonable... but I think it's easy to agree it's neither practical or easy. There's a lot involved to execute, space & time to work, parts acquisition. Lots of planning to get it done without major headaches. Is that something you have the capability to see through? Once the body is off the frame and the project is mid-stream, aborting (in your case), means it's a part-out sale & haul away what remains. So, the risk is actually lower, here, compared to someone who's doing this to their main vehicle.
If there's any eco programs, cash-for-clunkers kind of deals going on in your state, that could be an avenue to dispose of it, if you're planning on a new car purchase that it would qualify under. Or if someone you know (and trust) is planning something, you could sell it to them to trade on the program?
To some degree, there's a weight that unfinished things press on a guy. Having that truck rusting away in the driveway serves you no good. At what cost does it consume driveway space? Even just mental space? Debating what to do about it, over and over, this way, that way...
I'd imagine if you've relegated it to the back of the fleet, its disposal for any particular number isn't going to make the family homeless. That said, you may have to pay the piper from being fooled when buying it, and get rid of it. I understand and respect that you're not willing to try to fool the next guy into buying it. And now someone must pay; and unfortunately, you're the one holding the bag. Sorry man.
I've blown ludicrous globs of money in my 4Runner so I don't envy your position at all. Best luck, hope you figure it out and execute.
