Wierd new oil leak -- anyone recognize?

Guys, I was under the car today (2009 V6 4wd Limited) and I noticed a new oil leak. There are two big cast arms that extend from the front diff and are bolted through the main front crossmember. The left side one looks like always but the right side one was covered with oil (these pics are after I wiped it somewhat off). It's thick, black oil, not motor oil or ATF.

A couple weeks ago I had the dealer change pretty much all the fluids in the car, including the oil in the diffs and transfer case. Any idea what this new leak could be? I'm thinking that a seal or something on the front diff must have failed.

Thanks for any heads-ups!

That side gets a little oil on my 2004 Sport V8 when I remove the oil filter.

Could be your front diff. Maybe clean it really well, drive a bit and see if you can tell where it is coming from.

I think I have narrowed it down to the front diff/ third member assembly. The seal on the LHS of the third member where the halfshaft bolts up to it must be perished. I don't think it is from a normal motor oil spill because the oil is thick and black, not thin and golden-brown. Sounds like a major pain in the rear to replace it!!

Looks like the diff seal. Have you checked the fluid level?

If it's from the diff it will smell like stinky gear oil. Like mentioned check the level first.

My first thought was whoever changed the motor oil last did not do a good job catching it but that may be a different setup than on the V6.

Yup it's just a V6 (2009) and I think you might be exactly right. It's pretty much directly below the oil filter and perhaps when someone unscrewed it they spilled some oil. (I wouldn't ordinarily have noticed it except that I took the skid plates off to respray them.)

They definitely spilled some if they didn't put something under the drain tube that comes off the bottom of the V6 oil filter mount.
