If the ECU has not reported any DTC (check engine light) associated with a bad CC, I would be hesitant to spend that kind of money on something that may or may not be the problem. The fact that you only experience the smell occasionally is something I could live with if the vehicle is otherwise running good. It's obviously running efficiently considering your reported mpg.

For OEM parts that price is not terrible. In the rustbelt getting those manifolds off can be a bear. Kicker is if an upstream cat is actually physically degrading then the debris will end up in the downstream cat which is not listed. Assuming the engine runs good and if no odd noises I would certainly hold off on the cats. Like mentioned, when you smell it do check the temps of the wheels and do a sniff test on them. I've had a bad axle seal allow gear oil to drip on the brakes which is an odd smell but very specific to the corner with the issue.

here’s an update. not that anyone cares.

Got my trusted mechanic to do a full diagnostic and found nothing wrong. After a few months the smell completely went away.

My guess it that the car had been sitting for awhile without running causing a buildup. The dealership I bought my car from originally got my car at an auction where I assume it had been for awhile before. So turns out I just needed to drive the smell away. Haven’t had a problem since.

Yes 2wd. Over the years I’ve learned to drive more efficiently to save $$ on gas. My parents had an old sequoia when I was in high school and it would show the current mpg so I would play a ‘game’ with myself to pass time and try to always get a better mpg than my previous drive.
