Fluid is brown and almost like oil. Engine oil seems fine on check. Any ideas ?

I'd trace the leak up in the engine bay. It could just be a valve cover leak but the first pic seems like a rear main seal. Dig around to see during the daytime when you have some light to see properly.

And great thread, I've just read the entire thing!

Also 4runner gas caps are a wear item unfortunately.

Thank you! I’m pretty proud of it. I can’t take the credit though, I bought it this way. That was a product of my carelessness!

Thank you! I’ve enjoyed documenting it!!

That’s a good idea. I started from the bottom, but maybe a top down approach will help. I’m hoping it’s not that rear main seal, not sure how expensive those run! Thanks for the input though!

Detail day!

Still have been unable to locate leak. But I’ve been checking fluids regularly and everything seems to still be normal.

My coolest mod yet!

Been considering doing the timing belt/water pump job before my son comes in a few weeks. Just hitting 200k, my runner is overdue for it. I’ve looked into it - and it looks beyond my mechanical skills.

Anyone paid a shop to do this job - about how much should I expect?

I've heard quite a wide range of price quotes, but recently in Denver I've gotten quotes around $1200-$1500 inclusive of replacing the water pump and pulley tensioner.

I'd definitely shop around a few shops in your area and really drill down on what all they replace. It's one of those jobs that you have to disassemble so much, you might as well replace all the cheaper parts you can to avoid repeat labor in the future. Also, work warranty will be important as well.

Thanks for the info! That’s about what I was expecting.

I’ve read this as well - one forum post stated to go ahead and change spark plugs. Any other recommendations that you know of for replacement during this same job - I mean if they are gonna be in there, might as well do it.

Got a quote from my local dealership for $1100 for the timing belt + water pump job, that’s the best one I’ve gotten so far actually. Looks like she will be headed in soon for that!

Fair weather cruise photo from the other night!

Dropped off the old silver fox for Timing belt, water pump, and transmission drain and fill. I also asked him to replace the pulley tensioner if they had any in stock!

Loved seeing the other V8 4th gen pull in behind me, so cool to see two 15+ year runners still on the road running strong.

My dealer was nice enough to comp me a rental for the day or so it’ll take them for the timing belt job, pretty nice ‘23 Camry Nightshade

I’ve got to say - I love what Toyota is doing with these newer Camrys. The bronze wheels are just awesome!

Picked up! Fresh timing belt, water pump, and had them drain and fill the transmission.

Best part - all Toyota brand parts and came with a parts/labor warranty for 12months/12k miles.

Just did the timing, water pump and both exhaust manifolds with cat. I paid a couple thousand for parts and labor so those prices given are decent for the amount of labor needs to be done.
