Fuel pump

About how many miles will stock fuel pump last? I have 190k on the clock on my 08.

My 08 has 209k on it and mine is starting to show signs of failure.
Another members thread described similar issues with 230k.
Not an exact number but many other seem to be north of 180k when they do a replacement.
PN for the 4th gen is 7702035112

I replaced mine at 220,000 preventively. Its better to do it when you have time than when you get stranded

My fuel sender failed (gas gauge was all over the place) at 180k miles. There was no way I was only replacing the fuel sender if I had to drop the gas tank, so I replaced the sender and the fuel pump.

Make sure you replace the filter as well if you do it, and use a Denso (OEM) filter.

Thank everyone for the reply. I was thinking about the preventative maintenance so as to not be stranded. Lol

Timing chain / belt

This is my next question. When to replace them.

if made by Denso, can it be purchased without the Toyota mark up? and, is this a DIY job? i saw a tube video the showed an access port under the rear driver side carpet that allows you to unplug the pump electronically. in this video, they also cut the thin floor sheet metal to lift the pump out without dropping the tank (i am not recommending that method!).

Definitely a DIY job. Difficulty totally depends on the level of rust you've got. If your rust is minimal, and you can get all the gas out of the tank before swapping it, its really not that bad. You undo the straps, lower the tank, disconnect the hoses, and then pull it out and service the pump.

To clarify, I couldn't find an OEM fuel filter. Had to buy the entire assembly for that ($$$$$). However, you can get a Denso fuel pump for 125$ from Rockauto.

In case any of this is helpful, I cut and pasted my post about the recent replacement of my '07's fuel sending unit at 228K miles. I replaced the fuel pump as well since the tank had to be dropped anyway. As noted, I elected not to DIY it. While many have, it turned out to be a good call b/c the Denso fuel pump I ordered was missing an o-ring and wouldn't hold pressure. The repair shop had to drop the tank again to install the o-ring. YMMV of course. I would not recommend trying to cut the floor access larger, first b/c it's just not a good idea and also b/c the sheet metal there has numerous creases and reinforcements that would make cutting problematic. Here's the post:
===
Had my fuel sending unit replaced and did the fuel pump for good measure while the tank was out. The video at the end of this post by someone named Rick S. provides an impressively detailed analysis of the issue, the short version being that I recognized a number of the symptoms described have been going on with my truck for years. Recently it started reading 1/4 tank low all the time. I'm keeping this truck forever so I fixed it and wanted to provide some pics and info.

For reference, my 4R is an '07 V6 with ~228K miles.

Cost: Parts ~$283 | Labor $393 with 10% veteran discount makes the total ~$676. Yeah, a lot of money, but probably about a month's car payment on a new vehicle so there's that. Someone comfortable doing the job themselves could do it for about $250 worth of parts (fuel pump kit, fuel sending unit, and the housing with the filter media and even that's kind of optional).

Chokes me to pay the labor but after consideration of the job itself and other things going on, it was worth it.

Parts list. OEM items are from Cobb County Toyota's online store.
8332060440 $ 95.70 GAGE ASSEMBLY, FUEL SENDER
2330050120 $ 37.97 Fuel Filter << This is the housing w/filter media in it
7714435010 $ 33.59 Fuel Tank Lock Ring << Didn't necessarily need
7716904050 $ 6.34 Fuel Pump Tank Seal << Gasket
Denso fuel pump & mounting kit - ~$109 from Amazon

Here's a comparison of the fuel sending units and the problem is obvious - the "track" where the end of the float arm moves gets worn away over time.

Old:

New:

Interestingly, the 4th Gen fuel filter has two components. There's the strainer, which I have to say looked pretty clean for the age and mileage.

Old:

New:

Then the housing itself has filter media inside, visible through the hose connections in this pic of the new one. I unfortunately couldn't get a pic of the old one but it was nearly black.

Here's the video by Rick S. Worth watching if you're having these issues or just want a very thorough understanding of the fuel sending unit and how it works.

i have been experiencing power hesitation for several months now, at 230k. i've driven the 4runner as owner for about 4 years. i tend to keep the tank at about 1/2 full, running it to 1/4-warning light, then back to 1/2. i see the wear zones on your old pump. mine probably has the same in the 1/2-0 zone, and that is why the pump is working normally at a full tank vs a low tank.

if i keep it in the 3/4-full zone i will probably be good for a while until replacement. great and timely write-up!

That wear you're seeing on his old sending unit would only affect the gas gauge accuracy, it shouldn't have any affect on how the engine runs, only the pump itself and or the filter would affect how the engine runs!

Yes, rockauto has the denso pump.
