Gas cap won't stay tight....

So got the CEL with code p0456 for the fuel system, gas cap not tight. Went to check it and sure enough it won't stay tight. I went out and bought a new one with the same issue. They both click but never tighten down. My only other guess is that for some reason the metal part of the filler neck is worn down thus not allowing it to tighten. Anyone ever had this happen before and know a fix? Thanks

I just looked at mine and it's not tight either but all that needs to be done to make it tight is replace the rubber O-ring that serves as a gasket.

That's what I was thinking too, but even the new cap is not tight... It is a generic one from autozone though. But it is tighter than the old one. I just want to get rid of this dang CEL!

Know anyone nearby with a 4R? Swap caps for a few days?

What did you do with your 4runner today?

POS quality:

you can put a piece of saran wrap under the cap and then twist it on there and reset the codes and you'll know if it the gas cap

Is the lower part of the cap where it screws in actually loose? The top part that spins should be a bit loose but the lower part should fit tightly. Since mine was a bit loose I took off the old O-ring and it looked tired so I tried replacing it with a new O-ring. The old one is fatter than normal so I put on 2 R-30 O-rings from a universal O-ring kit and that seems to work OK since it's tight now. If I grip the lower part and try to turn it now it feels tighter than before.

I am going to try that as well with the 2 O-Rings. It is the lower part that goes into the metal filler neck that is loose. The tabs grab the metal groove, then I twist it to tighten and it clicks as usual, but there is almost no resistance when I try to loosen the cap. Im hoping stacking another O-ring on there will snug everything up. I have the new cap on it right now, just reset the comp and cleared the code.

Question Gas Cap Problem

Hi.

I was wondering if you ever found a resolution to this issue, and what you ended up doing? I am suddenly having the same issue with my '07 4Runner, and I'm not sure why. The gas cap clicks, but has NO resistance when I unscrew it, and my computer won't register that I have any gas.

Could you also tell me how to reset the computer, once I figure out the gas cap issue?

Thank you so much. I appreciate any guidance you can give me.

New OEM gas caps have a "springy" resistance to them when turning counter clockwise (unlocking)to unlock after the cap is locked in. If you turn your gas cap to unlock and do not feel this resistance before you feel the disconnect pressure, than your cap seals are probably worn and need to be replaced.

Simple solution - Just buy a new OEM gas cap from the stealership.

Ive had my CEL go off with VSC and TRAC lights. Ran the code and both times it said there was a small evap leak detected. I checked the gas cap and it came off with almost no resistance. I tightened it and reset the code. All was back to normal. However, i t just went off again today. So I am going to stop in the dealership and buy a replacement gas cap. Should be fixed.
