Excellent!

I always second guess myself after a job this big, especially if it spans multiple days. I would say that is normal.

As for the idle, I think the relearn procedure is to just let it run at idle for 20 mins or something similar.

Great job on this and nice write-up to bring this to a close.

It looks OK to me. You already covered the sides as well as the bottom. What you need to stop is the oil coming from the block (The brown side) to cross the flat silver side.

Head gasket repair / timing chain replacement?

Hi guys,

I ordered the head gasket kit and the head bolts from Toyota. I got a quote to have it installed for $1,200 + 160 to machine the heads. The mechanic suggested that I replace the thermostat and the water pump since they have to remove it anyway. I Found the Aisin waterpump at Rock Auto for $80 and the thermostat for $25.

He also suggested that it would be a good idea to replace the timing chain and the chain guides. The truck has 237,000 miles now (2004 4th Gen).

Does anyone know the part numbers for the timing chain or if there's a "kit" I can get? I want to get an idea on the pricing and make sure that I am getting the correct parts.

Is there anything else I should be replacing besides the chain and the guides? Such as the chain tensioner?

Do not get the generic water pump. I learned that the hard way. The gasket is inferior and who knows about the pump. I just did my head gasket gob for the second time because I didn't pay the $160 for machining and it ended up failing in the same spot after 90k miles.

Also use OEM thermostat and radiator cap. My generic thermostat housing broke internally and caused a mess of problems while to\ing in the desert in the summer.

Consider new idle pulleys. Other than that, everything is accessible as it fails down the road.

I think Aison is fine for the water pump but I would probably stick with OEM. If you order online and plan ahead, you can get very good prices for OEM parts.

There is no timing kit for OEM. All timing parts are sold separately. You will get varying answers on whether or not to replace the chains, tensioners and guides. I chose not to replace any timing components but there are a lot of folks who suggest doing so. You will have to make that call. If you do so, stay with OEM. It makes zero sense to replace old working OEM timing components with aftermarket ones.

Btw. that’s a great price for the repair. If you are in the rust belt, you may need to replace the exhaust manifold studs and nuts.

Thanks for the info zguy1. I'd like to use OEM if possible. I was under the impression that Aisin was the OEM supplier for Toyota for some of it's components. Is this not the case?

The mechanic will replace the exhaust manifold studs and nuts. He looked at them and they are rusted. About the price... The wife and I are from Colorado but are now living in Panama and auto repair costs are much cheaper down here than back in the US.

From my limited knowledge, I believe Aisin does make a lot of OEM stuff. I don't see an issue with using that. Go for it. My OEM comment was general in nature, I've had bad luck with brands like Dorman, Timken and Moog.

Aisin is owned by Toyota so I would think it should be OEM. I've always been told their pump is quality for Toyotas and Hondas. Kinda like Denso is good for the electrical side of things. Of course buy from a reputable source.
