Need advice on a big tuneup 173k miles

Hi all,

I plan on tuning up my ‘07 V6 Sport Ed at 173k miles. Mainly doing preventative maintenance, but I’d like to run it through the community as this will be my first time doing any of these. If you have any tips or things to not forget please let me know! All parts will be OEM bought through Joe Joe.

On my agenda
- Replacing radiator, upper and lower hoses all OEM
- Will be installing a transmission cooler (Hayden) at the same time since tranny is being flushed.
- Thermostat replacement
- Clutch fan replacement
- Serpentine belt replacement (Bought continental. Hope thats fine)
- Replace All Pulleys (Not sure part #s on these)
- Spark Plugs
- Valve cover gasket is leaking, replacing this.
- Lower control arms bushings are shot, replacing this as well.
- Front swaybar endlinks are shot, will be replaced.

Is there anything else I need to check or change as a “while I’m in there” type of thing? I’m a noobie mechanic so I’d love to gather advice before I embark. Thanks!

Front/rear diffs and T-case fluids.
Power steering fluid.
Bleed all brakes extensively and replace fluid, at least two containers of brake fluid.
Make sure you use the correct transmission fluid.

Others will chip in I'm sure.

By “flush,” do you mean a fluid exchange? If so, that’s a great idea, but a powered pressure flush isn’t recommended at your mileage. Also, just want to be sure you’re aware that the V6 transmission fluid already goes through a cooler inside the radiator. If you install an external cooler, consider adding a temperature valve that bypasses the external cooler unless temps exceed 180 degrees. See my build thread for more info and/or feel free to PM me any questions about any of this. I’m on the same path with the same year & model at 236K miles.

Also, if you do a power steering fluid exchange, one 4th Gen quirk is that the PS system doesn’t use PS fluid. Specs call for ATF instead. Seems weird but I trust Toyota’s engineers know what they’re talking about. :-)

The rest looks like a reasonable course of action. Maybe install a Fumoto valve at your next oil change? Takes the already easy 4th Gen oil change process to ridiculously easy.

When you add ATF to the power steering DON"T use the fluid that you're using for the transmission flush, the power steering take a different type, it's written on the reservoir cap and in your owner's manual what type to use!

Change PCV valve, check vacuum lines or replace( I did to all my 4runners), check and clean A/C drain, clean MAF sensor, clean throttle body. These are just a few things that should be done periodically.

@Tyla_T4R - this reminded me: consider extending the drain as well. Toyota compounded whatever errors led to the frame rust debacle by placing the condensation drain such that it drips directly onto the frame every time you stop while the a/c is operating. They didn't think that one through.

Serpentine belt go OEM. other Serpentine belt you will be getting that whining noise after 2 weeks

Major brain fart, but I did not mean to type transmission flush. The most I'll do at this mileage is a drain and fill every 25k miles.

I meant to say I plan on adding a transmission cooler since I will be flushing the coolant system, and probably replacing the radiator.
