2004 ABS brake issue, need advice

Hello, I've a 2004 4Runner with 135k miles on it. For last few months it has been making squeaking noises too frequently that made me conclude that issue is coming out of ABS. There is no check engine light so far. But I want to get it fixed as noise is becoming too frequent.

I've already got all the brake pads replaced and also got the brake bleeding done to rule out issues related to brake pad noise. It does stops perfectly and I could not even tell any issue if it was not for this noise.

I showed it to some mechanic and he said that the complete ABS unit can be sourced from some Salvage part shops that sell used parts from old cars.

I also read on internet and found out that this is some kind of known problem in this model year.

Given that the brand new part is going to cost me north of $3000 plus, would you guys recommend getting the complete ABS unit swapped with another used one?

I was wondering what if the other unit also shows up this problem?Any suggestion or where I could locate better part in South California.

You can get a complete brand new OEM master cylinder with all the ABS components attached for around $1311 + shipping, here's the part number and a link to one for this price at McGeorge Toyota in Virginia.

Part Number ABS Modulator Valve - Toyota (47050-60081)

You can shop around using this part number...but you most likely won't find it for much less, also you won't find a price close to this from your local dealers...unless they sell online...dealers that sell online usually sell parts for much much less than they do at their parts counter.

2004-2005 Toyota 4Runner ABS Modulator Valve 47050-60081 | Toyota Parts

That being said and posted, if you buy used make sure you get one that has the same part numbers as the one on your vehicle, this part varies a little form each year and they will not work if not from a 2004 or a 2005 year model. also only buy a used one with some kind of warranty the longer the better.

It’s definitely not a $3000 part but it is pricey for sure. I just picked up that unit for $1300 from my local Toyota dealer. I think your cost on it runs roughly $1700. Used is an option but you could run into the exact same noise on a used one. I’ve also read people having them rebuilt but I’m not finding the answers I like to hear and read about for me to take a chance on a rebuilt unit. So I went new and am going to install and bleed it myself. Almost everyone with a 4th gen has to have this discussion with themselves and their runners! You definitely have options you just need to make a decision.

Thanks for sharing, this one seems to be complete ABS Unit. Can you please share the dealer name/location? Also, what is the part number in this case for complete unit?

Great thank you, I looked online and I found that comparable part in Lexus dealership is priced less:

Lexus GX 470 Abs modulator valve. Brakes, brake - 4705060081 | Lexus of Orange County, Middletown NY

Do you think it would be exactly same for my 2004 4runner?

Where can I validate that this part works for my car? I've VIN. But not sure if I can creep inside bay to be able to find part number as its mostly dirty.

It should be the same part, Lexus is made by Toyota and most parts are interchangeable between T4Rs and the GX470 series of similar year models.

Same part number as mentioned above. Don’t forget to order your gasket when you order the booster it is a non reusable paper gasket.
