Rear hatch randomly opens
I've searched the forum and have not found an answer to this specific problem. Most answeres I have found is people's hatch won't open, motor problems, locking issues etc.
My hatch motor works. It shuts, it locks. However, I'll be going down the road and every once in a while I'll notice my door ajar light pops on. I have to stop and close the hatch. Sometimes a couple of times within 10 miles, happens more often off-road it seems. Sometimes it will go months without happening.
Will replacing the actuator solve this?
Thanks!

Sounds more like a short or loose wire somewhere, activating the unlatch. Could be the release button that you press when opening the hatch from outside too.

Sounds like I just need to get in there and tear it apart. Was hoping for a better solution.

Youre able to see and move the latch back and fourth easily? Its not just the motor you hear? IE no sand/ debris getting in the way
It sounds worse than it is to take it apart. Unscrew the rope handle, unsnap the inner panel. Remove the weather strip liner. The actuator has a plastic cover - take it off. Make sure the levers move freely. Try to clean out best you can. Check all the connections

Clean and lube the mechanism while you still can, that may be all that is needed for now. The hatch has 3 distinct noises, the motor pulling the door in, the latch clicking and then the motor releasing the now latched hatch. Not getting that click seems to always be a latch issue and will allow the hatch to pop open. If you have the door locks set to auto lock then I don't see how it would be a door switch as it should not operate when locked. I have a cheap Amazon latch in my rig right now and it's been working well for a year and a half so far.

I had a problem like this a few years back with mine, only after I had pulled the battery to do radio work/install a backup camera. It happened twice where I’d notice the interior lights come on and would find my hatch was open. Like many others are saying here just pull the hatch apart and ensure everything is clean.
Moisture can get inside the hatch from a bad window seal, so look out for that. The main hatch ECU is on the driver’s side, I think it’s 4 10mm bolts to take it off. Just take a good look at everything.
But spray some good lubricant in the lock mechanisms, pull your battery and let it sit for 15ish minutes before reinstalling. It’ll restart everything.
