Head gasket replacement - while I’m in there

Hey folks,

I’m replacing head gaskets on my 2004 4.0 V6. It has about 180k miles.

Obviously I’m doing all the associated gaskets, o-rings, water pump, thermostat and a new radiator.

Question is whether I should spent the extra $1500 on oil pump and timing chain/tensioners/gears etc…. Seems like a no brainer but that really adds a lot to the cost.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

I did my 2005 at 150k. I left the chain and guides and oil pump. I think I got a new chain tensioner. My chain fit exactly with no stretch and everything was a golden sheen from the oil. Still going decent at 230k miles and I tow a camper full time for the past 2 years.

I didn't replace any of the timing components when I did my head gaskets last year. I'm not recommending that, but that is what I did. To be honest, I wasn't sure how the job would turn out since I was doing it myself so I didn't want to potentially waste any money in case I botched repairing the head gaskets themselves.

Btw, I didn't check online pricing for the oil pump or idler gear, but all the chains, guides and tensioners can be had for around $650 - $700 before tax if you purchase online and have the time to wait for the parts to be delivered.
