Question is whether I should spent the extra $1500 on oil pump and timing chain/tensioners/gears etc…. Seems like a no brainer but that really adds a lot to the cost.
Thoughts?

I didn't replace any of the timing components when I did my head gaskets last year. I'm not recommending that, but that is what I did. To be honest, I wasn't sure how the job would turn out since I was doing it myself so I didn't want to potentially waste any money in case I botched repairing the head gaskets themselves.
Btw, I didn't check online pricing for the oil pump or idler gear, but all the chains, guides and tensioners can be had for around $650 - $700 before tax if you purchase online and have the time to wait for the parts to be delivered.
