Strange Braking Issue

It’s hard to put into words what I’m feeling when I’m applying the brakes but I will do my best. Whenever I start driving braking feels/functions like normal. After driving for awhile when I need to apply the brakes to either stop at an intersection or slow down to make a turn, I’m lightly pressing down the brake pedal but my truck acts as if I’m braking hard. It’s so weird, I don’t know what’s going on. Recently I had a garage fix a brake line. This was going on before the brake line went.

Anyone else experience hard braking when you’re only slightly pressing down the brakes??

Your brakes are grabbing. It can happen because the pads aren't installed properly or because the pads/rotors are contaminated. You say you had a brake line replaced.....so maybe your pads got soaked with brake fluid or they didn't get it put back together correctly.

Another thought could be if the brake panic assist is not functioning properly/falsely thinking it’s a panic stop situation. I’ve noticed that every once in awhile it will kick at a hard or panic stop and it stays on for maybe 5 seconds more. During that 5 second period, if you hit the brakes it’s uber sensitive and not acting like normal brakes. Not sure how the panic stop features works, but I’m guessing it has something to do with how quickly you hit the brakes versus how hard. However if that feature decided to kick in after driving for a while, you would have very touchy brakes. This is on an 05 V8 sport but I’m guessing that all of the trucks got this feature.

Is there a way I can disable this panic brake feature?? Where do I start to look into diagnosing this issue? This extra braking is really annoying now!!

I would look at the pads in the area of the brake line replacement area like the previous poster stated.

I've never heard of a 4runner having a panic brake feature. I have experienced the same issue that "iparker" mentioned. That is țhe ABS kicking in. The system is electronic so there will be a small delay when you first apply the ABS to when you get off the brakes and reapply them.

Just recently my brake was sticking somewhat. It was related to the brake pedal linkages.

That said, it wasn’t braking any harder than I had pushed, just wouldn’t let off as quickly as my foot would pull back.
