Exhaust options/opinions

The tailpipe on my 04 sport v6 has broken off. I was checking out the Walker Ss cat back option from Rockauto and I also found a slightly used Flowmaster Outlaw semi locally that I might be able to get a little cheaper when all said and done. Has anyone used the outlaw on their v6? Would it be a mistake or does it sound decent?

Thanks

this likely won't apply here.. but figured I would throw it out there..

on my '03 V8, what I ended up with (for a whopping $150) was chopping off the factory resonator, using a piece of the factory flange welded to it to mount it closer to the Y-Pipe connection just under the passenger front seat, and using a flow-master muffler with a welded 45 degree dump on the exit to dump the exhaust under the rig, just in front of the rear axle.

The sound is phenomenal (again, v8 makes a big difference), I won't be crushing the tail pipe on anything, cost was dirt cheap, and I don't have any exhaust fumes that come in from side or rear window.

I used to run loud mufflers, had a cherrybomb vortex, on 3 inch pipes in and out. I had to swap out the muffler since the muffler developed cracks on the case, you can really see the welds cracked in a few areas.

the next muffler that replaced that was a flowmaster super 44, tone was deep and it was loud also. compared to the magnaflow cat-back system, the flowmaster is still deeper and louder at idle.

I have videos on my youtube with the muffler setups.

my flowmaster super 44 is compared to another member here with that magnaflow setup.

then I found a deal of a lifetime on a borla dual tip cat-back exhaust. sound was quieter and made my truck more enjoyable to drive.

you really can't go wrong with either brands, borla is a tamer sound with the right parts, magaflow is better quality than a flowmaster.

I am in a similar boat right now, where my exhaust gave up the ghost and I needed to fix it.... and boy did I make a mistake, so let me give you my story (and also my past experiences with DRONEmaster.....er....flowmaster, as well!)

Before we go into the 4Runner, my past 2 vehicles with custom, catback exhausts were: 1999 Jeep XJ 4.0 inline 6, and a 1997 GMC Safari 4.3

BOTH had a welded, baffle type muffler, and 2.5 (or 2.75) mandrel bent piping after the muffler to the tail end.

BOTH had incredibly horrible drone.

GMC Safari had a flowmaster Super 50 - honestly, sucked. (sounded nice at idle and accelerating hard) but droned badly.

Jeep had a Thrush welded muffler which was a copy of the Super 44. Same story as GMC.

SO NOW.... let's get to the 4Runner. I recently got a killer deal locally on an MBRP complete catback, barely used (this should give you an idea as to where this is going). Guy had installed it, and then took it off. I figured "how bad could it be". It is a similar idea, of a can with baffles (no packing material)

IT SUCKS. DROOONNNNEEEE

So my plan now is to take off the MBRP muffler, keep the piping, and surgically stitch in a Borla Pro XS 19" muffler, which I know is quiet, and what I want. (Apparently the Thrush hush does the same job, but I know the borla is a straight through design with packing material, to keep it quiet).

Basically the take away here is, if you want DRONE and LOUD, go with a flowmaster or MBRP or whatever welded baffle type muffler.

If you want quiet with better performance, get the Borla XS series

I would say my experience with those types of mufflers is bad, and they weren't a good choice for a daily.

They would be fun on a bushy buggy/offroad only rig, or something you want to be loud and have a noticeable engine note

Carven Sells an exhaust dump kit that replaces the factory exhaust tip and resonator that has a downward facing tip. I guess it improves clearance? i think its going for about $380 right now, claims to fit 03-23 4runners.

I literally just installed the Carven dump exhaust. It hasn't left my driveway but seems to sounds great.

It isn't loud, just a slightly deeper tone than my old stock exhaust (when I rev it, like I said I haven't driven it yet) it is much more tucked up than the stock exhaust which is a huge benefit in and of itself.

Cool to see some first hand knowledge on the product. If i would've known about it just two weeks earlier it would've likely made it onto mine instead of the magnaflow.

Magnaflow drones on mine as well. contacted them and they recommended having a resonator welded to the exhaust. Magnaflow support also mentioned that retrofitting one of their mufflers that come with a sort of J pipe (they call it something else) might have clearance issues but they didn't say it was impossible. SO, now im curious.

They have 2 different style of cat-back exhaust, the newer one fits both 4th and 5th gen, have that extra parts to control how loud also.
The original cat-back had the dual tips out to the rear passenger side.

Having the exhaust out that side reminds me of my 3rd gen I used to own.

I think to quiet down the drone, weld a resonator before the muffler.

Ill probably do some math and have a muffler shop weld a J pipe onto the exhaust. I believe it changes the sound the least and targets a certain frequency (drone) instead.

I installed a Gibson Black Elite single catback exhaust on my 2007 SR5 V6. I've installed different exhausts and mufflers on almost every vehicle I've owned and I have been impressed with this. Despite being the V6 it's not too loud at all and doesn't have that trumpet sound VQs are known for. (I know it's not a Nissan but so many V6s sound similarly horrible and I just use that for an example) Got mine off eBay for $375 and used those slip fit clamps to help with leaks. So far so good.

Just a follow up since I finally was able to take it for a drive. It sounds really good (I was guilty of being the annoying guy revving his truck at the redlight lol). It is definitely much louder under acceleration, but when maintaining speed, it isn't very noticeable. But take into account I'm on 35" mud terrains with a snorkel, roof rack, led bar, and RTT...so it may drone a little I just cant hear it lol.

I just acquired a stock resonator and am curious about putting in an aftermarket muffler now. Hoping the resonator cuts out the drone regardless of what muffler I run

Do you get any drone with this setup? I'm wondering if it makes more sense to put the stock resonator before or after the muffler. I'm going to keep the exhaust tube that goes over the axle to avoid dumping it under the passenger compartment. Hopefully that cuts down on the interior noise.

no drone for me at all, the factory resonator made a huge difference. Mine is like stock, and is before the muffler. Without it, it was too drony and and not very clean.
