gear shifter getting hard to move

So I have noticed for the past few months moving the gear shifter from park to reverse or to drive, that it is getting harder to move. is this an indication that the shifter cable is starting to seize up or possibly its the actual shifter assembly or could it even be the transmission? Just want to try and diagnose this before it gets worse.
if it matters I have an 05 runner with the v8

Search floppy shifter in the Gen4 section. The piece that makes it floppy can also make it hard to shift. It's a detent the shifter follows in the center console. That area is the first place to look and at least narrow down where the issue resides. You can disconnect the cable there too so things can be isolated.

What Mike said above and it could also be the shifter cable bushing. You can get a nice replacement here - Shop Toyota 4Runner Shift Cable Bushing Kit Online
