Whats this leak?

Looked underneath the 4runner on Saturday and saw this leak.

Whats leaking? How bad is it?

Will be taking it to the shop this week. Hopefully it doesn't break the bank.

Hard to say but it's coming form the RMS area no doubt...first things first, I'd swap out your PCV valve and monitor the leak after you wipe it clean...could be a clogged valve pushing out fluid the next easiest spot or it could be a leaking Rear Main...oil is cheap and I would just monitor your fluid level and see how it goes...

Check for wetness higher on the bell housing. With any luck, maybe it's a valve cover gasket. The second picture is too blurry on the passenger side to tell if it's coming from above. I really hope for your sake that it's not the rear main seal but it kinda looks that way.

I agree with both thoughts in part

PCV is probably a good routine maintenance, although my 167K mile PCV (which I think was original) looked and functioned great upon replacement.

Definitely you (or the shop) should be tracing things up. It may be obvious in person that is coming from the RMS area, but often you can surprised what drips down and disguises itself as a leak when it is originating from elsewhere

Took it to my local shop today and they said it was the rear main seal. Estimated repair cost of $1,400. fml

Shop said to keep an eye on it to see how much is even leaking, so going to put off this one for a tad longer. Just spent $2k on 4runner last month for a brand new Power Steering Rack Replacement.

Plus 4Runner is only going to be driven about 2k-3k miles this year (work from home, plus two other cars).

Replace the PCV for $20 and 5min of time...oil is cheaper than a RMS and there's honestly no "good" reason to repair a small leak if you only drive it that much each year...just keep clean oil in it and do your routine maintenance check-ins and it won't cost you much...again, the PCV is an easy swap to piece of mind...they do clog and the typical first place you might notice a seep/leak is the RMS...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/153054862566

Use a 22mm deep socket or a 7/8 O2 sensor socket and the swap is easy!

Plus one on replacing the PCV, cheap thing to try. A sticking one can allow pressure to build which can create leaks.
