Electrical Issue when engine is off

2006 4Runner SR-5

The issues started a few days ago. Came out from the store, I unlocked the doors with the remote and the rear wiper started going. Thought it was just an odd fluke but got home and a few hours later heard a noise while inside the house. Came outside to find the rear wiper going non stop. Tried to unlock the doors with the remote but nothing happened when I pushed the unlock button. Started the 4Runner no problem and the wiper stoped running.

Drove around for a few minutes and everything seemed fine but when I turned off the engine the rear wiper started going again. As I sat in the driver seat keys in my hand trying to think about how this was happening, I realized the climate controls were still lit and the fan was still blowing air through the vents. I open the door and heard a bunch of clicking noises coming from the interior fuse box next to the steering column. I disconnected the battery for the night.

Next morning I reconnected the battery and it started right up. Drove to work and everything seemed fine. Parked, turned it off and all was still good. Couple hours later came out to check on it and the rear wiper was going again, remote entry didn't work and the clicking started again when the diver side door was opened.

Took it to the dealer, they messed with it for 3 hours and claimed it was fixed. Said they found some corrosion on something where the remote entry gets power and said they removed some after market parts like wiring for an after market alarm system. I have owned the vehicle since 2012 and never noticed any after market parts but I figured, well, there goes $600 but at least it's fixed!

Went to the dealer to pick it up and found the rear wiper going when we pulled into the dealer parking lot. Nothing is fixed, all the same issues $600 later.

Anyone experience anything similar and have an idea where to start?

Possibly wiring damage is allowing voltage to get to the supply for the rear wiper. Maybe in the flexible conduit where the door joins the body.

Next time it happens you could pull fuses for rear lights etc one by one and see if it stops. Then you know what wiring is affected.

I don't know why there would be an after market alarm. I thought alarms were standard equipment. Maybe they meant remote starter???

I agree that the fuse panel is the place I would start. On another car many years ago I found a short in the fuse panel caused by metal on the back side, shorting out connectors. I would look there for corrosion or maybe foreign material causing arching. Like SurferUK says, start pulling fuses.
