2005 4runner va water pump

I have a quick question about checking the water pump on a 2005 v8 4runner. When taking the clutch fan of and the belt still on front to get the nuts off it would spin. When it sounds would that throw off timing?

The external belt (serpentine) that drives from the crank the fan, alternator, PS pump, AC compressor has nothing to do with engine timing, that is a separate belt (timing belt) behind the cam covers and IT drives the water pump.

This is correct. Not really an easy way to check the water pump. Normally, it's replaced as part of the timing belt job.
