Jumped Time

My son's 4runner- 2007 Sport 4.0 shut off running up the highway. It just surged and shut down amd wouldn't restart. Since we couldn't see a crank signal, we replaced the crank sensor. Now the engine will start but struggles to start and won't stay running. It is obvious a timing issue. I am assuming it jumped time. I am going to tear it down and verify the timing however before installing a new timing set and doing all the extra work, what are the odds that it caused engine damage? I know it's an interference motor but just trying to put together my options. It has 158k Iles on it. We have only had it for 15k so I am uncertain of previous maintenance but I don't suspect oil was changed as often I would have liked due to the VVT solenoid I replaces right after purchase that was pretty sludged up and stuck. Any advice appreciated.

If it's only off a tooth or 2 you should be fine. If it really is off, why did it happen? Many have way over 200k on these engines without touching the timing set. Best bet is to pull the cover and see what's up. If timing is off, retime and check compression.
