Timing belt replacement (V8)
In the process of putting this thing back together after a water pump and timing belt replacement.

Before I proceed with the new timing belt install, will someone provide some clarity on this?

I've found various YouTube videos and have followed them during the removal of the original parts and have found conflicting suggestions for the install. Top dead? just beyond?

You probably know more than most that are seeing this. I'd verify with some YT videos and if all good, hand turn it a few rotations to make sure nothing is hitting and all lines back up. If memory serves me, I think the cams should line up every other revolution of the crank. It's been many moons since I've done a TB. All my current vehicles have chains.

I just did my 2008 V8. I lined up the crank on the oil pump dot, put both cams on the timing marks, not the T’s. It fires right up. As long as your belt marks align correctly on the crank and cam marks, you are golden. I can’t get any pics to load or I would show you pics.

I think the driver side cam mark is over to the left of the cam. Maybe 40 degrees off? It’s hard to see if that’s it or not. If so, turn it to the mark.

This is huge, do NOT use the Ts for the belt, ask me how I know!!! I did this on both cam sprockets, and the engine ran but ran like poop. Took everything apart and followed the FSM AGAIN, but this time, I did it correctly!!!

What marks did you end up using? The notes in the fsm to go past TDC always confused me. It just seems overly complicated. Seems to me just go to TDC, Put paint marks on old belt, cams and crank. Transfer marks from old belt to new belt unless it has marks. Line up marks from new belt to marks on cams and crank. Also make sure factory marks for TDC still line up on crank and CAMs with your paint marks. Make sure all slack is on tensioner side and the pull the pin. Am I wrong?

Thanks again for all of the help here. Before I pull the pin.. will someone sanity check this?

So I have the two cams lined up with the markers on the belt.

To line up the belt with the crank, I had to rotate it slightly (a few teeth) according to this: https://youtu.be/HPpzLJwoxng?si=JYiZcV2ybxBq-D-i&t=314

From the crank top down view, clearly the marks for TDC are no longer aligned and I guess my question at this point is.. is that okay? If I'm understanding the replies here correctly, as long as the 3 points on the belt all align we're in good shape?
