Toyota dealer blew up my engine. Engine options, opinions.
Hi all. Yes you read that right, my local dealer ruined my '08 4.7 and won't step up to the plate. They deny it was their fault. I'm weighing my options right now so I'll keep that quiet for now.
I figured if I'm going to have to change the engine I might as well try something and get all of your option and opinions.
Option 1 - stay with a 4.7. Found a few 4runner, gx470 engines with the lowest mileage being 82k. New 4runner, gx470 engines are discontinued. Not sure if I trust a rebuild and they are priced on the higher side. New Tundra 4.7s still available.
Option 2 - check if I can put a 5.7 tundra, sequoia engine in. Not sure if there are any kits to do this or is it all fabrication.
Option 3 - install an LS. i know some may cringe on this but they are plentiful, easy to get serious power out of them, big aftermarket following, easy to add power booster. Only drawback is there are not any aftermarket kits to install and it would alot of fabrication also.
Please let me know your thoughts, if anyone has actually done this or if I'm missing something and there are kits out there to do a 5.7 or LS swap.

Yikes. That sucks. Sorry to hear that. Curious to hear what the dealer did, if you don't mind sharing.
Dream is to LS swap my 4Runner one day, so I'm all in for option 3.

Dang, that sux. I'd try Toyota corporate too if you haven't yet.
Obviously, option 1 is the easiest. I would go used before a rebuilt.
Would the other motors even fit in the space?

This maybe an option for for you to consider for a good engine, they sell rebuilt engines with a 7 years, 1,000,000 mile warranty (yes that's 1 million miles), even if you DYI the install, but you may have to document the install, I don't know how it works, but check it out.

My 2008 V8 4Runner..........
IIRC......the 2008 4Runner V8 is completely manufactured in Japan, along with the rest of the vehicle.
What's unique about this......is that the 4.7 V8's built in Japan have a forged rotating assembly. V8's built elsewhere are cast.
Hope this helps.

Dang man! That truly, truly stinks. I'd send in an email to Scotty Kilmer and see what he says. Same with The Car Care Nut. ;) Just to get some other opinions from car guys who actually do the wrenching.
Another guy is an engine builder, Dave from Daves Auto Center in Utah. Not sure where you're located, but if you're local to him, he could be an option too.
Aside from getting a bare crate engine of a 4.7, all other options would be going in blind. You have zero idea on how said engine was maintained or how it came to be.

Another 4.7 option if you don't want to go with a rebuilt, a brand new OEM short block!!
There's 2 options depending on your OEM build code, this is just one of them, both are the same price.

The dealer did some work on my engine and left the top radiator hose off at the engine side and let it run for 2 hours unattended. It got overheated. They towed it back from my house and said it was OK. I felt something wrong on the way home. I did 2 cooling system pressure checks. First one I let sit for almost 1 hr and the pressure went from 16 lbs to 5 lbs. The second test was about 1/2 hr and it went from 16 lbs to about 8 lbs. I could smell coolant out the tailpipe. Compression check showed 7 out of 8 cylinders were all within 3-5 lbs of each other ( 195-200 psi ). 1 was at about 170 ish but still within spec. Bank 2 spark plug insulators were steamed clean while bank 1 were burning perfectly. It's also knocking.
Called corporate, CSR said that they would side with the dealer. Nice huh?

Over here it's generally accepted amongst petrolheads that once a vehicle is out of warranty, you are better off going to a quality independent specialist. Sorry they did this to your truck. I once put a Suzuki in to have the (Bucket and shim, what a stupid system) valve clearances checked and it came back with no dipstick. Only because I check the oil did I notice.
