The toyota dealership said the rear drivers side axle seal was deformed from the factory and was probably leaking for a while, I have been smelling gear oil for a couple months and finally found out that it was the axle seal, I looked on my car to find that smell and never could. I have had my 4runner for about 7 months now.

Was the fluid leaking only on the driver's side brakes or on both sides?

Just on the drivers side, He showed me the seal and it was deformed, the mechanic said it happens from time to time when they put the axle in they rip the seal or it's deformed from the factory. Mine was pretty much leaking from the get go.

OK, that makes sense. If it was leaking on both sides, the story about the seal on one side being bad just wouldn't be reasonable.

When do you expect to get it back?

I already got it back it took about 2 days, they just built a super toyota repair center next to me it has a built in enterprise rent-a-car and about 40 bays to repair cars and they even have a automatic car wash so if you buy a car there you get free car washes for life. This is the largest repair center I have ever seen, you pull your car up and the doors automaticlly open and you park inside

technically you can get warranty work done at any toyota dealer. but some dealers give you crap about doing work if you didnt buy it from them. the better dealers could care less about where you bought it from.

Any dealer will do, though most seem to take care of customers that buy there first. I've also seen some independent shops that say they can do warranty work. Not sure if they're telling the truth, or if it's just a come-on.

I bought from a dealership where I knew the service was top-notch. In fact, it's 40 miles away and well worth the drive.

Well guys I've had my 4runner back for a week and thought all was well but it isn't, guess what, it started leaking again. I called toyota and they want to replace the seal again but I think there is something else wrong that is causing this, I have even replaced the presure valve. Anyone have any clues. The only thing that I can think of is a deformed casting or axle?

It sounds like a deformed casting if new seals did nothing to fix the problem. I'd just let Toyota fix it 3 times and Lemon Law it. Make sure you have all your documentation and it says exactly the same problem on all the work orders.

Same problem as well as dif keeps cracking

I'm having diff fluid leaking as well but I fixed that and a year later my rear end destroyed itself. I got a whole new rear end and 2 months later my 3rd member chipped a few teeth off. Any ideas to what could cause a rear end to go out twice on a 03 v8 t4r

My 2003 V-8 Ltd has 145,000 miles with no delay in shifting at start up nor any oil leaks from rear dif. I guess I am Lucky!

Need help with 4runner not starting

Im on day 3 of no 4runner so i thought id come here for some help.
2005 SR5 4.0 not starting, not clicking. the only thing that happens when i turn the key is the radio goes dim. also my scanner can not connect with the computer when plugged into the obd connector. almost seems like a immobilizer is on or something. Also i found 2 shorted out pins on the drivers side kick board where the junction box is it was 2 wires on the bottom of the connector one red one blue with red stripe. I have replaced the starter and checked all fuses and relays i can see. any help would be appreciated. Also can you start the 4runner without a drivers seat in it?
