Map lights

Anyone know how to get at the map lights in the overhead? I would like to replace them with xenon super whites but can't figure out how to get at them.

I am not 100% sure, but when my Homelink was installed, you had to take out that whole panel. It snaps out but you have to give it a firm pull. There should be two tabs in the back of it.

Looks like a firm pull could become a quick snap and a trip to the parts counter. I tried pulling it down from the rear but it's tough.

I know your question has nothing to do with Homelink, but I think this previous thread will help you get a better understanding of what I am talking about. Go to page 2 of this topic and there are some pictures and an explanation of how the piece is taken off. Hope this helps!

You can pry the covers off by inserting a flat head on the side you push on to light up. You might want to wrap the flathead with a cloth so you don't scratch the console. Once you get that off, it's a pain to get the bulb out, the "reflector" leaves a very small space for your fingers to access the bulb.

The front part of the trim (closest to windshield like Toybox posted) is where you can get some fingers underneath, but then I would try to get around to the sides of the plate again and pull from there. Tugging from the front edge caused me to snap off a plastic tab, separating the trim piece from the electrical housing (containing the lights and homelink) that's clipped in to the roof. You really want everything to come out as one unit because that plate is the only handle available to removing the light assembly.

Thanks Mark!

I followed your link to the thread about the homelink and how to take down the overhead console. Well that homelink was so cool :too cool: and easy to install I dropped $98 bucks at the Toyota dealer today and bought it. Seems as if I lost one of the clips during the removal of the console. It must have fallen into the roof stabilizer. Good thing I can't hear it rattling......yet. :twak:

After I got the overhead down I realized that it doesn't have to come off to replace the bulbs.

Thanks go to Tkr128 who had the correct answer.

Thanks everybody!
