Real Mileage & price on 4Runner
All,
I just found this forum today. I am considering purchasing an '04 SR5 V8 4x4 w/ 3rd row seats. This is going to be a multi-purpose vehicle for my family... mainly a kid-toter but also it will go to the beach, pull a camper and needs to get me in and out of the woods from time to time. I am very impressed with the truck and think it will meet my needs. I have found these forums of great usefulness in the past and would greatly appreciate your input!
What I am curious about is what kind of mileage are you getting with the SR5 4x4 V8? I know it is rated at 16/20... but I am curious what the real-world experience is.
Also, when I configure this package @ carsdirect.com, I come up with a price around 31,400. Am I going to do any better than this?
Thanks again for the input, opinions and help!

Welcome aboard and glad to hear you're looking into a 4runner.
Things to look into: try searching as these topics has been heavily covered.
But that said, here's what I get:
12mpg don't get me wrong. I've done alot of mods so I expect the heavy loss. I gotta say I'm just the elite few that get this mpg ;) The good news is that most 4x4 v8's are getting around 15mpg and as high as 18. So that should give you some .
Price.... go to www.edmunds.com and check out their tmv price. That's probably a good figure to play with and make sure it's around that figure or less. I paid $ when I got mine when it first came out so we don't need to go there
GOod luck!

Thanks for the input... I did try the search feature before posting. However, when I searched for "mileage" or "economy", I did not get what looked like the right answers to my questions. I did get some hits on the price... that I will agree with. I'll try my searches again and see if just overlooked something.
I figured that this was a heavily discussed topic... it is on other boards as well. I just need to work on my search a little!
Thanks again!

The computer says our V8 SR5 is averaging about 17.3 or so, but it's really getting about 15 to 16 mpg according to my hand-calcs. All 800 or so miles currently on the vehicle have been in-town and somewhat rural commuting (no freeway miles). Our Jeep Grand Cherokee got about 16 average on the same commute, and it was a 6 cyl. so we're pleased that it's about the same with MUCH more power at your disposal.
We paid $30,500.00 but got squat above blue-book for the Jeep Grand in trade. I'm happy with the deal.
'04 Dorado gold peal SR5 V8
moonroof / 17" wheels / VIP alarm / several other minor options.
Wish I'd bought a sport edition for 2K more. I'd like to know how much of a difference that linked-suspension makes.

My Jeep Grand Cherokee got only 13 miles to the gallon, my new 4runner gets about 15 miles if I do city driving and about 19-20 on the highway, even thou my computer only says 17.2. So I am pretty happy. Unless they come out with a 300 hp hybrid 4runner that gets 30 miles to the gallon, then I would be envious.

mpg indicator has varied from 14-17 mpg. when i had it on mpg all the time i couldnt get it to hit 17mpg, but once i started leaving it on range, i would check it once in a blue moon and it would read 17-18 mpg. go figure, guess a watched pot never boils so to speak.
note: onboard mpg is usually ~2 mpg on the high side

Mileage , mpg , miles per gallon , gasoline
12 - 18mpg.
As low as 12 for stop and go city driving. As much as 18 for highway driving at 55-60 mph.
The above values are hand calculated. As most everyone has noted, the mpg computation displayed in the truck is consistently about 2 mpg too high. And, again as most everyone has noted, the truck's range computation is much more accurate than the mpg computation.

I think I win for the lowest gas mileage on this board. I get 10-11 mpg all city stop and go driving (I commute 3 miles each way to work). I think my highest was 13 mpg after driving on the highway for about 30% of the tank.

4WD V8 Limited
I get about 17-18 real MPG. I do 60% highway (75-85 MPH) and 40% town. I just drive with traffic most of the time, and sometimes I go a bit faster in town. On the highway I tend to drive faster than traffic.
Just town I get 14-15, and just highway I've gotten 20-22 and I normally drive around 80 mph.
I do use premium only and mostly Shell and CHevron.
Obviously the comp display adds another 2 MPG, so I initially though the Runner was pretty good on fuel
