04 4runner steering problem

Anyone experiencing problems with their power steering? I'm getting hard steering and pulsing while turning. The fluid level is ok, had the wheel alignment checked and replaced the pump to no avail. Replacing the rack will be costly. Any ideas? Thanks.

Talking Steering problem fix

The problem is the U-joint at the lower end of the steering column. Part cost is around $180 online from Toyota Parts East.

Many people make the mistake of thinking it is the pump or the rack, when it is just a simple U-joint going bad.

This is an increasingly common problem found in many other makes/models of vehicles.

Lubing it with penetrating oil will buy you some time until you can get a new one installed.

Hopefully this helps anyone searching this thread.

2004 four runner steering issues

in response to the steering issues, mine has developed this issue as well, my boy friends Tacoma had this issue last year and it was a u joint in the steering, he greased it up and put back in and is fine now,Ii suspect that is my issue and he will be doing that to mine. something you may want to check out since it requires no cost except your time to take it apart.

My 04 4runner is having the same issue...Feels like the the steering wheel binds in certain spots. Fluid level is perfect and the fluid looks great. No squealing or funny noises. Doesn't make any difference if the vehicle is moving or in park. I was thinking of replacing the pump but I guess I need to check this U joint?

Hey cam9457,

Your first post - welcome to the forum!

Yes, checking the u-joint in the intermediate steering shaft would be a good place to start.

Here are two threads to check out for more information regarding this u-joint - with pictures of the intermediate shaft (where the u-joint is) and how to diagnose if this is your steering problem (lubing the joint will provide temporary relief of the problem, but it may require complete replacement of the shaft).
