Cross Country Road Trip

Going to the Keystone State late May for my son's wedding. Thought about renting a vehicle (about $600) but like the feeling of the 4Runner. Stopping off in Chicago to see the Cubs on the way back. Any thoughts on rental vs. Runner appreciated.

For $600, you might be able to get some cheap airfares, too.

But it really comes down to the cost of fuel, insurance, and miles against the rental (also, fuel, fees, etc.). Don't forget that taxes and fees can add 10-25% to the cost of the rental.

yes could go by air, but a road trip sounds more fun.......one of my concerns was just adding that many miles to the 4Runner vs. a rental but with everything considered travelling in the 4Runner would be more fun..........I mean they have a Buick Lucerne but boring i think so.

Do you own or lease the 4Runner? Are you going to keep it for the long haul? How much did you pay for it? Why did you buy such a cool vehicle?

Here's my take, if it's not a lease vehicle and you're not trying to have a low mileage trade-in enjoy it! Think back to why you bought it and I'll bet it included fantasies about fun roadtrips and that's partly why you parted with so much money. You could've had a capable, decent vehicle in the X-terra but you wanted the last 10% of capability and the last 15% of polish. Why did you want the 'extra' over the X-terra? Answer: for this trip that you are about to rent a Lucerne to take.

A well maintained 54k mile 4Runner that you have had since day one is as good as a 46k mile 4Runner that is on a used lot. I'm talking about the value to you personally. And you want to do the trip of a lifetime in a Lucerne?

On the other hand, if you're not going to do the scenic route, you're not going to stop and smell the roses, if it's just going to be pedal-to-metal interstate driving then rent. Have fun!

Thanks for your help. For all those reasons I plan to take the 4Runner. It is safe, fun can handle late snow without difficulty and rides like a dream!!

wedding is in Bryn Mawr Overlook Country Club. My son tells me the Philly people know how to "throw down a party". Will take the camera.....like you said....once in a lifetime. :bonk:

Whoa! I'm taking a road trip on June 12th! Me and my two buddies are heading to the west, from Chicago.

In all honesty I would never rent a car to drive across country. I own a car. I bought it because it fit my needs, and takes whatever I throw at it. Roadtrips in excess of 5k miles are included in those needs. I have no reason to doubt that your 4Runner will make that trip 20 times before something major would happen. Hell even my '95 (which we are taking) I still trust on that roadtrip. Even my firends do, which is why we are taking my car versus my buddies *shudder* 2000 Plymouth Breeze.

Buena Suerte! (good luck)
