What is wrong with an 06 Sport V8 4Runner?
I am seriously contemplating buying one. What are the positives/negatives compared to any other model?

There's nothing wrong with it - the 4Runner is a great vehicle!
You can check out toyota.com to compare the Sport Edition trim level with the SR5 and Limited trim levels - most of that information was still true in 06. I'd say the two biggest mechanical features on the SE as opposed to the other trims are X-REAS (standard on SE, optional on Limited), a dynamic shock absorber system that reduces body roll, and larger brakes (SE only). The SE also has some unique exterior features like the hood scoop and special roof rack rails and running boards.
If you're looking to see what changed in various model years, see this thread.

Cool, thanks Toto. It is about the same price as an 07 SR5 with V6, so I was just wondering if it was worth it. Some vehicles have huge improvements that only the hardcore guys know about from year to year (or even within a model year). Like the FJ Cruiser had a big improvement mid-year to make it so that ATRAC and RR Diff Lock could work together.
I just wanted to check and see if there was anything I should be on the lookout for.... or if I would be better off with an 07. Gas mileage isn't really an issue as my commute is 4 miles round trip each day. I will only be putting lots of miles on when I go to the mountains or other similar excursions.

I don't think you can go wrong. The big changes happened '05-'06. If either one has side-airbags I'd use that as the deal maker/breaker. If niether has them then it's a really tough call.
There are numerous V8/V6 threads. It seems almost everybody (self-included) is loyal to what they have which is pretty cool, it means you can't go wrong.
-V8 plusses: silky smooth, torquey, not that much of a hit on mpg.
-V8 minuses: no 2hi mode, timing belt that needs replacement occasionally.
-V6 plusses: surpringly good power & mpg considering weight and aerodynamics, smooth enough, easy oil changes, no timing belt replacement, 2hi mode.
-V6 minuses: it's not a V8, it doesn't sound like a V8, while more than adequate it doesn't have that silky smooth torque when the light turns green, it's not a V8, it's not a V8, it's not a V8, it's not a V8, it's not a V8, it's not a V8!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Anyone else get the feeling that CJ3Flyr is a fan of the V8?

I am a fan of both!
I am also a fan of everyone donating to me so I can put lots of off-road toys on my current T4R and purchase a Mack Daddy V8 with leather, nav etc to pull my highly modded V6 to wherever
Somehow I don't think it's going to play out like that

I own an 07' Sport V8
100% perfect except for:
Needs less body roll
Stiffer springs
Larger rotors
Cayenne like braking/ handling would be nice but than the price soars
Buy it.

Nothing! It's a great truck. I love mine.
Ok, I admit, I'm not a fan of the hood scoop. But that's about it.

da brakes mon
I've never seen stopping distance of the SR5/Limited vs Sport (.7 bigger front rotor I believe, 12.6 to 13.3 I THINK)
It IS a 4500lb vehicle that is very smooth and adequately quick, I want the biggest brakes I can get.

nothing wrong with my 06 V8 Sport, except the 2WD was fine in New Orleans, the AWD would be nice now that I'm in Denver.

I'm sure you could swap hoods with non-scooped hood in a heartbeat. They would be lined up at your door!

That's like the Cayenne owner thinking how nice it would be to go off road!

I love my 2006 SE V8. My suggestion would be for you to get one of those. Although, I am bias.
IMO, it's a better drive then my sisters 2006 MDX and my brothers 2007 ML350.
For the record, I'm pro hood scoop, and anti spoiler. Not that anyone asked.
