My 2008 V8 sport only made it to 148000 when a piston rod broke this year My 10 year old daughter was hoping that would be her car when she turned 16. I thought we could make that happen because we put so few miles on it!

That's not a great mileage to have a failure like that, what are you going to do?

Right now it's sitting at the dealership. We bought a new-to-us 2017 4wd Premium in a pretty color. But it's no V8 sport!

Our options were to have them rebuild ($17-20K), find a remanufactured engine or a used engine. Those prices were more palatable, but there are no engines available that the dealer service, or another Toyota specialist in town can find.

I'm here to post it for sale to someone who loves 4Runners and has an extra engine they want to put in it, space to store it until an engine becomes available, or has the know-how to rebuild it. I certainly don't want to sell it for scrap!

Given what I have read about availability of vehicles at the moment, I'm sure you won't struggle to find someone with the parts and knowledge who will be interested!

$2,967.67*

Cooling System Fluid Exchange
$119.95*

Depends on what your financial situation is. You've listed just north of $4k in repairs, could you buy something you'd be equally happy with vs. putting the same $4k into your truck?

Also, if you're capable with a wrench, you could knock most of the stuff on the list and save a bucket of money in labor. And once the timing chain is serviced, you're good for another 300k.

Sidenote, why are they suggesting changing it now? Are you have issues? Seems a bit premature but that's just my opinion.

Loving these high mileage 4runner posts. I'm at little over 215K now and bought it with about 154K on it 4 years ago.

What's the highest one posted so far?

Pretty much as eleven14 says, can you do basic mechanics? That's about my level and I have done the coolant/spark plugs in this, and the PCV valve on another vehicle. It was a bolt-in part at the top of the engine, easy. You could do it at the same time as the spark plugs. As long as you are methodical and patient it really does look like a worse job than than it is, I promise!

That fuel injection thing sounds redundant to me, besides the occasional bottle of Redex at £5 I've never put any treatment in and never had a single fuel injector problem in any vehicle I've owned...

Start with the easy stuff, the guys on this forum are so helpful I'm sure they'll advise if you have any problems.

My 4R just hit 181k the other day. Nowhere near the highest mileage, I know.

I bought my 2004 in the fall of 2007 with 65k already on it, mostly highway (?) miles. I used to drive it a lot on long trips but, thanks to covid and my own health issues, it’s finally down to ~10k/yr miles. In the past six years, I’ve only put ~15k on it. It was built in 4/04, so it’s almost 18 years old now.

Love the rig but...not sure if its worth it...Any thoughts?

Is your truck showing a check engine light at all? How often do you change your oil? How is the engine running? any rough idle or hard starting?

I've read on this forum that the timing chain and gears are good for the lifetime of the engine with regular maintenance of changing the oil when it is due.

My 06 v6 has had oil changes every 5,000 miles with valvoline maxlife 5w-30 and toyota filter for the past 130k miles and mine runs like a top.

I think they are trying to scare you into buying a timing chain and gears that are not needed.

The stabilizer end links are bolt on and easy to change. Moog makes a set made in Japan that I installed 4 years ago and they are just fine.

Amazon.com: MOOG K90677 Stabilizer Bar Link : Automotive

Coolant is cheap. $30 a jug from Toyota. Get the pink coolant. Drain and fill radiator and burp out the air bubbles. again, easy to do. I've done this 4 times now on mine.

Spark plugs are easy as well. $60 for Iridium that I installed and took about 30 minutes with a long extension, 3/8 driver and spark plug socket and gapper.

Good luck!

4 4runners

I sold my wife's 2008 limited with 248000 miles. 2 battery, one alternator and 3 or 4 sets of tires (don't remember)
Now she has a 2016 limited 4x4 that sat in the garage 5 years because she did not want to get it dirty. It now has 25000 miles or so.

I don't have it yet, but I'm about to buy a 2004 V8 Limited with about 270k miles. Seems to start and run and drive great. Appears to be garage kept, with all 3 keys and 2 remotes as well. Hopefully can get it to my mechanic tomorrow to get it in the air to check everything on the underside really well.

I know the timing belt is due, but my fingers are crossed on everything else.
