You can do better than that.
A reasonable offer is invoice minus rebate.
Respond with that offer. Thats what I paid for my 07'.
If he says no there are others out there who will take that offer.
Email at least 4 Internet Departments with that offer.
Go to Toyota.com and locate 5 Dealers in your area.
Click on "search new inventory" and go at it.
I spent around 6 total hours searching and emailing
and got my Sport for $6300 off MSRP.
Dealer also dipped into holdback to the tune of $200.
Accept no offer other than that. Invoice minus rebate.
You will find one.

Awesome.. I'm so glad I posted here regarding this. I'll keep trying..
Do you know if 'dealer' is the 'invoice' price? The reason is, I'm not sure what the invoice price is because sites like edmunds say "being researched" for invoice.
Thanks much kn38ms!

i'd say that isn't a bad price at all. i paid mine $39377 before tax and lic.
and i am already very happy with the price. think about it, where can you get yourself a fully loaded, reliable SUV with navi for under $40k? it maybe from state to state, prices maybe slightly difference. i just think as long as i am not paying ridiculous high price, and if i am happy with what i'm getting, i'll just go for it.

That total might be reasonable, but to clarify, I'd get a number before tax and license. I don't see how they made the jump from those other numbers to $42,140.73.
Running that list of options on Edmunds, I'd put invoice at about $40,500. That means I'd start there, subtracting any applicable rebates, and then adding TTL.

In my region, SUVs just aren't selling at all as gas approaches $4 per gallon. Dealers are slashing prices just to move them, especially used vehicles. Case in point, I wanted to trade my '05 SR5 for a 4 cyl Tacoma pickup. The dealer offered me 5 grand, then a dealer across town offered me $5,500. I would negotiate, but that's rock bottom! They said its because they have to sell them so cheap.
I would lowball my offer, even on a new one, but better yet, I would look for one that is slightly used with very low miles that was traded in by someone who didn't want to pay $80 per tank on a vehicle that gets ~17 mpg.

That 07' should be around $7-8K off MSRP by now
A cracksmoker for sure.
Like I said earlier I purchased mine for $6K off MSRP 7 months ago.

With gas prices the way they are, you can do much better on a full time 4WD V8. Somebody I know at a Toyota dealer told me that they can't move any of the larger SUV's on their lot. Definitely bargain more!

Trucks and SUVs sales are hurting bad, if gas prices doesn't stabilize it'll only get worst. Especially in the used market. At any rate, this is a good time if you need a vehicle that isn't stingy on gas. Check out this CNN article.

^^ agreed. I noticed on a particular street that sells nothing but cars have all the big gas guzzling SUVs and Trucks in the back part of their car lots.. not in the front in the elaborate rotating stands and what not.
