It's one of those quirks about the 4Runner, if you haven't discovered it. The MPG computer tends to be 10% optimistic is what most members find. Some a bit higher and some lower.

I use it to gauge my fuel consumption accordingly, not so much as an accurate representation of what my current gas mileage is, just for curiousity purposes only. If it's lower, I'm using more gas and either climbing more grades, headwind or driving a bit more spirited. If it's higher, my credit card will thank me when I get to the pump.

Well, as I mentioned in my first post, this was only highway miles. Non-highway miles are on the opposite end.

My comp. is only .2-.3 off vs manual checking. If I was to calculate in for the add'l miles traveled and not recorded because of the larger tires it would probably be closer.

I consider mine accurate.

I wish my 4Runner was this accurate.

In my case, the dash display runs 13-14% higher than the calcualted MPG.
The only time it get more accurate is when I am towing. Then it runs 4-5% higher than the calculated MPG.

BTW, the highest MPG reading I have seen in my 4Runner happened this morning on the way to work..... 26.7 MPG

The highest I have been able to maintain (on the computer) is 21.5 mpg. This is 80% highway, 20% city and driving at the speed limit or lower

The computer is doing the same math to calculate MPG’s that we do, just in real time. How accurate is your speedometer? If that is accurate, the MPG display should be accurate.

Tire size and tire wear will affect how accurate the speedometer is. I get just over 21 MPG with a 2004 V8 sport.

For improving mileage;

Correct tire pressure.
Tire alignment.
Good wheel bearings.
Drive train fluids in good condition.
Lighter tires used less energy to get going.
Extra weight in the vehicle.
How you drive.
Air resistance i.e. roof racks.
Clean air filter and throttle body.
Clean injectors.
Good spark plugs.
Clean vehicle, mud and dirt is weight.

06 sport v8

I bought this 4Runner with 166kin Jan 2020 Second 06 v8 4 runner I have owned. First one had 27k in 07. The 07 I was getting 24mpg computer calcs.
The one I own now I was getting 21mpg hard calcs and never looked at computer. Lifted the front 3” installed HD springs with new shocks and Ridge Grapplers 265/70/17. Now I’m getting like 14mpg traveling 80mph and 9mpg going 70mph pulling a box trailer 14’ 1200# I’m not to disappointed. Now have 189k one the ole girl.

I get about 16 mpg with my 2004 V8 sport. Mostly city driving and I don't nurse it.

just to throw mine in here... 08 v6 sport with 265/70 tires & all else stock gets 20.6-20.8 on computer driving like a grandma around town & speed limit on highway, never over 70mph. havent done any manual calculations yet.

the area you drive in makes a big difference too, mountains & big hills reduce MPG a lot.
