Well, filled up the 4Runner for the first time. Truck said 22.9 and my calculations put it at 20.3. Reset it, drove 35 miles on hwy and it was reading 26.7! Only 425 miles on motor so Im thinking I will be getting 20mpg at least on a regular basis. For a truck this size, I think that is outstanding!

I just installed a 5000 lb hitch my V6 Urban Runner and pulled my 19' Robalo center console with no problem. Mileage for the trip averaged 12.8 mpg. The boat and equipment will weigh in around 4500 lbs. My piece of junk Ford 6.0 SD gets 13 mpg to do the same. I bought the UR because I couldn't depend on the Ford anymore. Would advice that the trailer have working brakes on the trailer. I have the ones that actuate of the trailer hitch.

With mixed highway/city driving, and really being conscious of lights, braking and coasting, I can get a real 20 mpg in the summer with my '06 V6.

At constant 65 mph on the highway, in the summer, with no wind influence, it will do almost 21 mpg.

As for my trip computer, it is consistently 10% optimistic on average mpg when compared to the odometer/tank fill. On the other hand my odometer is 2% pessimistic, which would mean my trip computer is really only 8% optimistic. Just so its perfectly clear.....

2006 V8 w/18k on the motor. 2.5" lift w/Donahoe CO front and hoe springs and shocks rear, 265/65/17 stock tires, SW sliders, front hitch, Volant CAI and Gibson exhaust. Oh yeah, and one new windshield wiper.
Everything else stock.

I was getting 17 with the CAI only. Added the Gibson catback and it went up to about 17.5. Then I stopped using the Lucas gas additive and it jumped up to 18.8 on my last tank.

I milk the gas for mileage and most of my commute is a backed up freeway. I got 20 on my trip back from Tahoe and that was before the Gibson and I was using the Lucas additive.

LOTS of variables to overall mileage, but-DRAG!!!

One of the variaibles I don't see discussed much that is HUGE for highway driving is DRAG...which engineers can verify but I'm quite sure increases as a FACTOR of speed. I have a built '06 V8 SE. Full protection front bumper (Shrockworks), 3" lift on 33" Nitto G2s (A/T), a small Rhino rack attached to the stock (Tube) roof rack with a jack and some lower profile stuff up there for longer highway transits (VA-CO/UT), Safari snorkel, DT Shorty headers with cats and a Flowmaster cat back (stock Y-pipe). I recently drove to/fr UT and ended up with a combined mileage over 5800mi of about 15.7. I tracked mileage closely on the transits to/fr and found that WIND was a HUGE factor! A 20mph headwind at 75mph indicated is creating the drag of 95mph!! mileage was terrible. 14ish. I picked up a tailwind of over 20mph going West through KS and was showing/calculating as much as 22mpg at 75mph. Terrain (ups/downs) and driving technique (manual mostly with use of Cruise only when there were no big uphiils that would get the car to shift to 4k RPM to maintain speed) were comparable. This was on 85-87 Oct pump gas. The combined figure included a LOT of off road driving in between the 2k mi transits. Very little idling (I shut down when I stop). A lot of gravel road and rough tertiary roads and fair amount of loaded 4x4 roads doing 5 mph. I think this is a typical "overland" type trip. I also found that driving a "throttle position" vs a constant speed (like a semi driver) on rolling hills kept the RPMs down (yet annoyed my fellow driver - I didnt do this with traffic). Ultimately, if there is 1 way to increase mileage, it is to REDUCE DRAG!
