Unhappy Electrical Problems, Please Help,,,

I have a 2004 Sport Edition 4 Runner, just got it last week, all displays inside are off now, none of the climate controls are working, the lights do not turn on, all windows do not work, I did check the alternator and had it replaced, however the brake lights do work,

Has anyone had this issue before, please help, where do I start, when I purchased the car the lights did work but not the climate controls or the radio, after driving the car for less than a week everything is off, the car runs but can't even use turn signals,

I thought Toyota electronics were more reliable that Lucas Electronics,,,

Appreciate your help,,,

Wow, that's an interesting combo! Does it run? Did it have those problems before the alternator was replaced? Have you checked all of the fuses?

Yes it runs, Engine and Transmission work just fine, no problem there, yes it did have these problems before the new Alternator.
I have a weird problem that I have to press to lock button next to the shifter before I can put the truck in gear, I am not if that is related or not?

As CJ3Flyr said, I would definitely check the fuses first. It sounds like a main fuse, so I would concentrate on the fuses in the engine compartment. Check power at each fuse (and both sides of the fuse) with a multi-meter. It would be advisable to write down your findings on paper so you can keep track of everything.

If power is good there I would move to the passenger compartment fuse box. Again take very good notes.

You will most definitely have no power or low voltage at a main fuse considering all the systems that are affected. I would even suggest pulling each main fuse and re-seating them. Look for corrosion on the terminals. Once you find what isn't getting power, you can focus your troubleshooting better. Depending on what you find of course, will determine the course you should take. You can wiggle the wire harnesses around the fuse boxes, and try to follow the wiring from the areas that don't have power. Look for kinks or breaks in the wires, and look for where the wires may be rubbing on something metal (again, by wiggling the harnesses, and by visual inspection). Along with wiggling wires at the fuse box, I would shake the wires at each connector, or manufactured break (terminal, junction, switch, etc).

If you haven't downloaded the wiring diagrams from techinfo.toyota.com yet, I would suggest you do. Focus on power source, then the individual systems. Look for common power.

I have the wiring info downloaded for my 2003 which shouldn't be much different, so worst case shoot me an email or pm with your email address and I can send you a few pdf's.

I can't research it right now as I've got some things to take care of this afternoon, but will see what I can come up with when I'm able to.

The weird problem with the shifter is probably due to the brake light switch not having any current going through it.

I just sent some pdf's in two emails. If you don't receive one, let me know which one you did get and I will resend.

It would also help us out helping you if you went through and made a list of everything that works and doesn't work so we can have a better idea what's going on. V6 or V8, sunroof, brake lights work but no tails? alarm, interior lights, key chime, cigarette lighter, mirrors. Do climate controls work but no display or does not work at all? Does the instrument cluster work at all? Any warning lamps illuminated either with the key on and engine not running or with the engine running?

One other thing. Have you done ANYTHING with your truck since you bought it? Installed a radio, ANYTHING? If something electrical was installed, obviously that could be a problem. Even things that may appear to have nothing to do with the problem should be looked at. Even non-electrical things. Because it may have caused a wire to short out by pressing it against metal, or even pull a wire out of a connector, etc. Extreme long shot, but you never know.

Ok, you said the turn signals don't work. How about the hazards? If just the turn signals, it seems to me like you might have an ignition power problem. This could be anything from a fuse, to the ignition switch, etc. Just a possibility.

Of course, we'll need the list of what's working and what's not working to help determine that.
