Where to Buy Filters?
Took my Runner into the dealer today for its routine oil change and tire rotation. They mentioned that I needed to change my air and cabin filter. They offered to do both for $70. I am by no means a mechanic, but these are two things that I think I can tackle on my own, my question is, where is a good source to pick up the filters?

that price was probably for parts and installation... an air filter from the dealer is around $15... the cabin filter should'nt be that much more expensive... just go back to the dealer and buy it in the parts dept...

$70 for both????? No way. The air filter is $15. The cabin air filter is around $25. Takes less than 5 minutes to install both filters. Buy the filters from your Toyota parts department and do it yourself.

Last I checked the dealers wanted $25 for the Cabin air filter alone. I have been getting them off ebay. I don't always get OEM, I think the last ones I got were Wix. They have always seemed to be of equal or better quality than OEM. If you want a good after market replacement go to NAPA. They usually carry some of the Higher quality brands for both filters.
Napa list the cabin filter for $18.89 and their best Engine air filter for $21.49-V6 & $15.69-V8. I think they would be Wix filters.
Both are very simple to change, they will take about 5 mins each. There are instruction as to the location of the cabin filter in the owners manual.

I suppose I am opening myself up to ridacule but I just handwash with (dishsoap) the element for the cabin filter. It seems to do just fine. I know that it will need replacing eventually but I figure it has 3-4 washes before it'll need to be replaced.
I just replaced the air filter. I looked at aftermarket filters. They have less material and are visually inferior. The premium Napa may be ok. I didn't look at that one, I just settled on a Toyota filter.

maybe someone can dig up the old thread on the cabin filters being cut out of a furnace filter. THere was a good thread on this, where people just bought a furnace filter and cut 4-6 cabin filters out of them. They discussed which furnace filters made the best ones, based on air flow etc. This is for the cabin filter only of course.

It was a 3M Filtrete (sp?) filter. It's a white fibrous, non-paper filter.

Here are some of the threads on cabin air filters:

BTW, I get 4 cabin filters out of one 3M Filtrete filter. At $4 each they are hard to beat.
Before my last state inspection and 30K service I replaced both the cabin and engine air filters for less than $18.

Uhh, yeah. I made my own cabin filter in about 10 minutes. You can get a 20x24x1 filter for less than $10 and that makes 4 cabin filters.
I documented part of the process (since it didn't take too long) on my blog
