rusted skid plate bolts

My bolts that hold up the skid plate, are pretty much done. Some of the threads are stripped, and a couple of the bolts are stripped as well. They're pretty rusty too "Illinois road salt, no doubt". Anyone else ever face this problem? Anyone know the bolt sizes, if they're common enough to buy at the hardware store? Or are these dealership specific?

thanks all!

2001 GS430 - Sold @ 60k miles 8/10 - absolutely the most boring "sport" sedan to drive, even with 300hp.

2007 CPO 4-door VW GTI fully loaded - absolute riot to drive, love it!

I would find a dealer who supplied aircraft hardware and buy grade 8 high strength Cad. or Zinc plated bolts also washers and nuts.

Kinda funny that this thread got started. I dropped something down in my engine and it landed in the front skip plate. in the process of taking off the front bolts, I snapped one of them in half! if the bolts that hold these to the car are this weak, then I don't want to find out how strong the skid really are. as far as getting the bolts, they are part # 9011908A33 at the dealership and cost me $2.18 for one.

When looking at the bolts head if there is nothing there it's a grade 3 or less. If you see some small bars then it's a grade 5.
I am betting it's a cheap worthless soft bolt sold at any local Lowe's or Home Depot for .50 cents.

When I took the skidplate off, all the bolts were semi rusted. I put them all in a ziplock bag, WD-40 like crazy and they came out pretty clean and went back in easily.

$2.18 for one! Ouch! Oh well, guess I can't really complain too much over $10 bucks for all 4. 97hb, I've read some of your posts, and I've got to admit, I like your style amigo! you've got some great ideas!

Yea I'll admit that it is pretty expensive, but fter they did my last oil change, I noticed that one was missing and told them that they ''misplaced'' one and they paid for it. But now that I snapped one in half, I'm going to have to pay for the next one.

Contact your local Fastenal Branch and take the bolt into them. They should be able to match the bolt size with a 18-8 or 316 stainless steel bolt. It is comparable to a grade 5 which should do the trick as far as strength. I see you're out of Raleigh, NC. You have 3 local branches:
